The second book in the Falconer trilogy is packed with surprises and suspense. Aileana Cameron, the Falconer, disappeared through the portal that she was trying to close forever. Now she wakes up in the fae world, trapped and tortured by the evil Lonnrach. With the help of an unexpected ally, Aileana re-enters the human world, only to find everything irrevocably changed. Edinburgh has been destroyed, and the few human survivors are living in an uneasy truce with the fae, while both worlds are in danger of disappearing altogether. Aileana holds the key to saving both worlds, but in order to do so she must awaken her latent Falconer powers. And the price of doing that might be her life. Rich with imaginative detail, action, fae lore, and romance, The Vanishing Throne is a thrilling sequel to The Falconer.

The external charm of the Coliseum has recently been spoilt by the cutting down of all the trees and destruction of the beautiful pomegranate gardens on the lower slope of the Esquiline, and the erection in their place of the most hideous and gigantic houses... -from Walks in Rome English aristocrat Augustus J.C. Hare filled his days with trips to the Continent, and returned home to share his journeys with eager readers-and the journals of his travels still enjoy a cultishly devoted readership today. His Walks in Rome was first published in 1871; this replica of the 15th edition, from 1900, offers a virtual walking tour of: . the Corso and its neighborhood, including the Piazza del Popolo, the Temple of Neptune, and the Fountain of Trevia . the Forums and the Coliseum, including the Temple of Mars, the House of the Vestals, and the Arch of Constantine . the Palatine, including the Palace of Caligula and the House of Hortensius . and much more. Charmingly enthusiastic and obsessively detailed, this guidebook continues to be invaluable for today's travelers, and for those fascinated by the ongoing metamorphosis of a modern metropolis. Also available from Cosimo Classics: Hare's Sketches in Holland and Scandinavia. British travel writer Augustus John Culbert Hare (1834-1903) also wrote Epitaphs for Country Churchyards (1856) and Wanderings in Spain (1873).

The miniatures and cuttings from medieval and Renaissance manuscripts in the Robert Lehman Collection represent the major schools of illumination that flourished in Europe from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century. Robert Lehman must have considered illuminations above all an extension of his great collection of Italian, French, German, and Netherlandish paintings. In a broader sense, they manifested one more facet of the interest in early European art that led him also to collect exceptional Netherlandish and German drawings of the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Among the small but choice selection of illuminations catalogued here are a leaf painted for the Hours of Etienne Chevalier by Jean Fouquet, the most celebrated French painter of the fifteenth century; a miniature by the "prince d'enluminure," Simon Marmion, painted for a Breviary for Charles the Bold and Margaret of York; and, among the Italian cuttings, a Last Judgment in an Initial C by the great Florentine painter Lorenzo Monaco and an Adoration of the Magi by Francesco Marmitta that is accompanied by a letter attesting to its sixteenth-century papal provenance. A Self-portrait by Simon Bening and a Virgin and Child signed by Francesco Morone are early instances of small paintings on parchment conceived as independent works of art rather than illustrations for manuscripts. A miniature Holy Face by Gerard David may have been meant as an independent devotional image, or it could as easily have illuminated a book. A biography of each artist and copious illustrations supplement the extensive catalogue entries, which place each of the illuminations in an art historical context that is as specific as possible. The Sexuality Of Christ In Renaissance Art And In Modern Oblivion

Originally published in 1983, Leo Steinberg's classic work has changed the viewing habits of a generation. After centuries of repression and censorship, the sexual component in thousands of revered icons of Christ is restored to visibility. Steinberg's evidence resides in the imagery of the overtly sexed Christ, in Infancy and again after death. Steinberg argues that the artists regarded the deliberate exposure of Christ's genitalia as an affirmation of kinship with the human condition. Christ's lifelong virginity, understood as potency under check, and the first offer of blood in the circumcision, both required acknowledgment of the genital organ. More than exercises in realism, these unabashed images underscore the crucial theological import of the Incarnation. This revised and greatly expanded edition not only adduces new visual evidence, but deepens the theological argument and engages the controversy aroused by the book's first publication.

Titian Remade explores imitation and the modern cult of originality through a consideration of the disparate fates of two Venetian painters: the canonized master Titian (ca. 1488-1576) and his artistic heir, the now-unremarked Padovanino (1588-1649). Reading the latter's Sleeping Venus (1610), triumph (1620), and Self-Portrait (ca. 1630) against corresponding works by Titian, Maria H. Loh argues the case for repetition as a positive act of artistic self-definition. Her history of creative emulation and engaged viewing in early modern visual culture offers a profound vision of art as a continual process of retrieval and projection that effectively bonds the present to the past and the self to the other.
