In 2005 the Hong Kong newspaper 'The Standard' reported that no less than 183 Chinese cities had the official ambition of becoming modern international metropolises. Urbanisation is the engine behind the economic, political and social advances in China. This book shows the influence of these unfamiliar cities on the world economy. After the explosive growth of vast cities on the Chinese coast near Peking, Shanghai and Guangzhou, the development is now spreading westwards. Metropolises are springing up like mushrooms in Central and Western China. Still, it takes more than just a large number of residents or skyscrapers, of course, to achieve metropolitan status. These vast cities still lack an international reputation, a lively cultural life, and the presence of different population groups. Or don't they?

"Kuniyoshi The Faithful Samurai" is a pioneering publication dealing with the famous Kuniyoshi series of the 47 masterless samurai ("rônin"). It contains two complete series: "Seichô gishi den" ("The faithful samurai, 1847-48") and its sequel "Seichô gishin den", ("The faithful hearts, 1848"). This true 18th-century tale of 47 "rônin" avenging the death of their lord is enormously popular in Japan. The dramatized version, commonly known as "Chûshingura", ("Treasury of loyal retainers"), has endured for over 250 years as one of Japan's most popular Kabuki plays. Its heroes were often depicted in Ukiyo-e prints. Kuniyoshi was a master in the genre of warrior prints, and his series expressively portrays these warrior 'folk heroes'. This publication also includes translations of the texts recounting each hero's exploits that appear on the prints.

A guide that shows painters, drawers, doodlers, and urban sketchers how to bring their drawings to life with colorful, bold, yet accessible painting methods. Watercolor sketching is a rapidly emerging technique that enlivens sketches done in pen or pencil with the expressive washes, glazes, and luminous hues of watercolor . This lushly illustrated resource teaches artists on the go how to sketch with watercolor, rendering subjects efficiently and without inhibitions. Readers are guided through all aspects of the medium, from fundamental techniques including wet-on-wet, glazing, and washes; materials and supplies; and little known tips and tricks for getting the most out of watercolor (for example, just sprinkling a little salt on your painting creates a texture that's impossible to achieve with a brush.) A strong focus color theory provides a solid foundation for enhancing drawings with vibrant hues.
