Negli ultimi due decenni la ricerca neurologica italiana ha avuto un notevole sviluppo contribuendo considerevolmente alla crescita culturale della Neurologia mondiale. Il Manuale è stato scritto dai neurologi dell’Università Sapienza di Roma, esperti nei diversi settori della Neurologia. Particolare attenzione è stata dedicata agli aspetti diagnostici, clinici e terapeutici delle diverse malattie neurologiche segnalando anche i recenti avanzamenti scientifici. I curatori hanno favorito la coerenza stilistica e l’uniformità nell’approccio alla materia con lo scopo di fornire uno strumento di conoscenza e di consultazione agile ed efficace. Il volume è costituito da 32 capitoli (su argomenti di Neurologia, Neuroradiologia e Neurochirurgia), compresi un capitolo sulla Neuroriabilitazione, uno sulla Neurologia Infantile e uno sui Principi di Psichiatria. Riteniamo che gli ultimi tre capitoli, pur nella loro diversità, siano essenziali per una migliore e completa conoscenza della Neurologia. Il Manuale resta, comunque, uno strumento utile essenzialmente allo studente di Medicina, compresi gli studenti delle Professioni sanitarie. Il massimo spazio è stato dedicato, infatti, ai sintomi di possibile origine neurologica che si incontrano nella pratica clinica generale ed alle patologie neurologiche che il clinico dovrebbe conoscere. Desideriamo ringraziare per la loro dedizione e professionalità tutti gli Autori che han- no contribuito alla stesura del manuale. Sentiamo di voler rivolgere un ringraziamento particolare al Prof. Mario Manfredi per aver contribuito con la stesura del capitolo sui Nervi cranici e per averci concesso la possibilità di utilizzare molte delle illustrazioni presenti nel suo celebre volume di Neurologia. Il manuale “La Neurologia della Sapienza” non è un punto di arrivo, ma di partenza. Il nostro intento è di aggiornare e rendere sempre più completo il volume con successive edizioni. La ricerca, infatti, va avanti e in questa II Edizione sono stati aggiornati la quasi totalità dei capitoli, a dimostrazione della vitalità della comunità scientifica neurologica e della necessità di un aggiornamento costante per clinici e studenti.

Headache disorders are among the most common disorders of the nervous system. They are pandemic and, in many cases, they are recurrent and can accompany the patient for the whole life. These disorders impose a substantial burden on headache sufferers, on their families and on society: the individual impact is measured by the frequency and severity of attacks, while the societal burden is measured in terms of loss of activity at work and school as well as of costs for the health system. As a matter of facts, headaches are ranked in the top ten, and maybe the top five, causes of disability worldwide: they are therefore extraordinarily common. Population-based studies have mostly focused on migraine, which, even if it is the most frequently studied headache disorder, is not the most common . Other types of headache, such as the more prevalent TTH and sub-types of the more disabling chronic daily headache, have so far received less attention and need to be better investigated. The main aim of this book is to show the features of DiQuMASPAB so ware through the description of its graphical interface, by giving special emphasis to all those aspects implemented in the code. DiQuMASPAB, acronym of “Differential Quadrature for Mechanics of Anisotropic Shells, Plates, Arches and Beams”, is a computational code, which can be used for the numerical analysis of doubly curved shells made of innovative materials, using the Generalized Differential Quadrature (GDQ) and the Generalized Integral Quadrature (GIQ) methods. The software can investigate the mechanical behavior of these structures through different approaches and structural theories. In particular, this code allows considering a kinematic expansion characterized by different degrees of freedom for the Equivalent Single Layer (ESL) theories and for each layer when the Layer-Wise (LW) approach is taken into account. As far as the materials are concerned, it is possible to consider different lamination schemes, as well as various distributions of the volume fraction of the constituents for those layers that vary their mechanical properties along the thickness. In addition, the software analyzes structures with variable thickness and characterized by variable mechanical properties that can change point by point. A finite element formulation is also available to investigate the mechanical behavior of plane structures characterized by irregular domains and mechanical discontinuities.

These notes illustrate the basic elements for analysis and design of linear control systems. With 15 chapters and an appendix of 4 sections the notes start from the notion of mathematical model (system), explaining its important role in the study of a phenomenon and how linear models can arise in practice. Through the time and Laplace analysis the behaviour of a linear model is studied in detail.The basic notions of stability, steady-state and transient response and structural properties give a deep insight in the study of the behavior of an abstract model.In this first part of the notes, the emphasis has been put on the analysis of the properties of a linear system. In the second part of these notes the basic model interconnections are studied, in particular the feedback interconnection and its importance in the design of control systems. The aim of this book is to introduce and explain important physical processes at the heart of the optical properties of semiconductor devices, such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) and semiconductor lasers.
