This book is the music notational transcription of Lazaro Galarraga's 'Arara ' CD on the 50-50 Records label. The author has also included a brief history and explanation of the Arara genre and tradition as it is practiced in the Afro-Cuban folkloric culture. In recording his 'Arara ' CD, Lazaro Galarraga drew on a lifetime of playing and singing the songs from this rich tradition. He first learned Arara songs from his grandmother, Petrona when he was five years old. Lazaro credits her and his aunt Gregoria as his first teachers. As a teenager he was an active member in a house of Arara where he often sang at Arara ceremonies. Later he became a member of the Conjunto Folklorico Nacional de Cuba, where he routinely performed Arara songs as part of their repertoire. For a more detailed biography of Lazaro Galarraga, please see the Appendix at the end of this book.

Jack Kaiser is a professor of English at a Los Angeles community college. He presents himself as an enlightened, politically progressive metrosexual teaching courses with names like Film and Feminism. In his free time, however, he prowls the brothels of Tijuana and the sex-tourism hot spots of Cuba. Without his being consciously aware of it, his classroom lectures begin to turn into psychodramas in which he attempts to reconcile the contradictory worlds in which he lives. His life is brought to crisis when he busts a female student for plagiarism and she responds with a bogus sexual harassment charge that becomes a lawsuit. Kaiser, awaiting trial and seeking some kind of redemption, precipitously undertakes a mission to smuggle books into Cuba to deliver to a mysterious fellow named Lázaro Perdomo. His trip becomes an odyssey through Havana's sexual underground, a world of party girls, drag queens and Santería, and culminates with a final confrontation in a Los Angeles courtroom.

For the Achi, one of the several Mayan ethnic groups indigenous to Guatemala, the music of the marimba serves not only as a form of entertainment but also as a form of communication, a vehicle for memory, and an articulation of cultural identity. Sergio Navarrete Pellicer examines the marimba tradition -- the historical confluence of African musical influences, Spanish colonial power, and Indian ethnic assimilation -- as a driving force in the dynamics of cultural continuity and change in Rabinal, the heart of Achi culture and society. By examining the performance and consumption of marimba music as complementary parts of a system of social interaction, religious belief, and ethnic identification, Navarrete Pellicer reveals how the strains of the marimba resonate with the spiritual yearnings and cultural negotiations of the Achi as they try to come to terms with the political violence ...

In this beautifully written work, Marjorie Becker reconstructs the cultural encounters which led to Mexico's post-revolutionary government. She sets aside the mythology surrounding president Lázaro Cárdenas to reveal his dilemma: until he and his followers understood peasant culture, they could not govern. This dilemma is vividly illustrated in Michoacán. There, peasants were passionately engaged in a Catholic culture focusing on the Virgin Mary. The Cardenistas, inspired by revolutionary ideas of equality and modernity, were oblivious to the peasants' spirituality and determined to transform them. A series of dramatic conflicts forced Cárdenas to develop a government that embodied some of the peasants' complex culture. Becker brilliantly combines concerns with culture and power and a deep historical empathy to bring to life the men and women of her story. She shows how Mexico's government today owes much of its subtlety to the peasants of Michoacán.
