Old Jamestown, Missouri, in far north St. Louis County, has a long and rich history that includes an American Indian settlement associated with Cahokia Mounds, land grant holders of English and Scottish heritage who arrived in the late 1700s, German immigrant farmers who came during the 1800s, and prominent wealthy families who arrived in the mid-1900s. As early as 1805, Old Jamestown ferries crossed the Missouri River to provide connections from St. Louis and Florissant to St. Charles County, which is home to Portage des Sioux, an early military outpost, and the City of St. Charles, Missouri's first state capitol. With only two miles separating the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers just to the north, Old Jamestown was also connected to Illinois locations. Today Old Jamestown has some subdivisions but development is limited because of the karst (sinkhole) topography. *** Peggy Kruse is not a historian or a professional writer but she became interested in Old Jamestown history in 2011 and in this book has compiled many of the fascinating facts and stories she came across in her research. Peggy grew up in north St. Louis and attended Cor Jesu Academy on The Hill in south St. Louis. She transitioned through several careers, including as secretary at the FAA Lambert Field Control Tower and as auditor and manager with the Defense Contract Audit Agency. After retirement in 1998, she volunteered for a variety of organizations, assisting them with accounting projects, government applications, and web sites. Peggy holds BSBA (Accounting) and Master of Accounting degrees from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She and her husband, Ray, have two sons and four wonderful grandchildren. *** Royalties for this book will be donated to the Old Jamestown Association. *** NOTE: Page numbers in the Index should be reduced by '1' for correct number. This will be corrected for the next edition.

In 1891, when coal companies in eastern Tennessee brought in cheap convict labor to take over their jobs, workers responded by storming the stockades, freeing the prisoners, and loading them onto freight trains. Over the next year, tactics escalated to include burning company property and looting company stores. This was one of the largest insurrections in US working-class history. It happened at the same time as the widely publicized northern labor war in Homestead, Pennsylvania. And it was largely ignored, then and now. Dixie Be Damned engages seven similarly "hidden" insurrectionary episodes in Southern history to demonstrate the region's long arc of revolt. Countering images of the South as pacified and conservative, this adventurous retelling presents history in the rough. Not the image of the South many expect, this is the South of maroon rebellion, wildcat strikes, and Robert F. Williams's book Negroes with Guns, a South where the dispossessed refuse to quietly suffer their fate. This is people's history at its best: slave revolts, multiracial banditry, labor battles, prison uprisings, urban riots, and more. Neal Shirley grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and now lives in Durham, NC, where he is involved in several anti-prison initiatives and runs a small publishing project called the North Carolina Piece Corps. Saralee Stafford was born in the Piedmont of North Carolina. Her recent political work has focused on connecting the struggles of street organizations with those of anarchists in the area. She teaches gender-related health in Durham, North Carolina.

When the doors of the lift crank open, the only thing Thomas remembers is his first name. But he's not alone. He's surrounded by boys who welcome him to the Glade - a walled encampment at the centre of a bizarre and terrible stone maze. Like Thomas, the Gladers don't know why or how they came to be there - or what's happened to the world outside. All they know is that every morning when the walls slide back, they will risk everything - even the Grievers, half-machine, half-animal horror that patrol its corridors, to try and find out.
