The Atlas of American Diversity visually captures for the reader the racial and ethnic variety of contemporary America. Through the use of over 200 maps and charts, the Atlas tells the story of dozens of these groups - from Tongan Americans to Salvadoran Americans to Italian Americans. It examines their residential patterns in the United States, their family patterns, occupations, age distribution, income, immigration history, and housing preferences, among other topics. A final chapter compares these groups on many of these topics, highlighting the variability of the American experience for members of different ethnic groups. Distilling thousands of pages of census documents and other statistical data on American racial and ethnic groups into easily understandable maps and charts, the Atlas highlights trends and conditions not otherwise observable, making it an ideal tool for scholars, students, and policy makers alike.

Clinicians undergoing competency testing, certification, and periodic recertification are frequently faced with computer-based exams designed to evaluate clinical acumen and judgment. Test questions often include an image or radiograph followed by a vignette of the clinical encounter and a series of questions. Designed to better prepare practitioners for image-intense, computer-based examinations in their respective fields, Atlas of Human Poisoning and Envenoming is a visual and written reminder of the ubiquitous sources of toxins and toxoids in the environment and the outcomes of accidental or intentional toxic exposures in humans. The Second Edition has been restructured with bulleted text, tables, and figures resembling the vignettes that accompany national examinations. Combining the four specialties of toxicology—analytical, medical, environmental, and industrial—into one comprehensive atlas, the book presents photographs and diagrams of toxic plants and animals, their mechanisms of poisoning or envenoming, and the human responses caused by toxic exposure. Highlights of the new edition include: Prescription and illicit drug abuse epidemics Environmental and occupational nephrotoxicology and neurotoxicology Tick paralysis Petrochemical toxicants Biological, chemical, and radiological warfare agents Workplace substance abuse screening and monitoring Epidemiological design and statistical analysis of toxicological investigations The book is conveniently divided into four sections covering general medical toxicology, environmental toxicology, industrial and occupational toxicology, and epidemiology and statistics for toxicology. Supplemented with a 16-page color insert, the second edition includes new images and tables. The atlas will be a useful study guide for a range of practitioners preparing for a lifetime of image-intense national examinations.

A leading American authority on Quebec and U.S.-Canadian relations examines the intimate and complex relations between the French colonies of Canada and Louisiana from the initial explorations of the Mississippi valley by men of New France and their subsequent settlement and administrative, political, and economic leadership of Louisiana well into the period of Spanish control following the Seven Years War. This book traces persisting controversies between Louisiana's Canadian elites and their Native-European French counterparts in Canada and the different social, religious, and economic evolutions of the two French colonies. Hero subsequently explores the sharp decline in communications between Louisiana and Quebec and the continued mutual social, cultural, and economic divergence under the Spanish contrasted with the British. That comparative analysis continues after the Louisiana Purchase until the Second World War, by which time the great majority of Canadians and others of French descent, save the Acadians and francophone nonwhites living and working apart from the American majority, no longer spoke French. This book continues with the accelerated assimilation of most of the children and grandchildren of the remaining French speakers, notwithstanding growth in active educational and other cultural collaboration of Louisiana with Quebec following 1969 and then the decline in bilateral collaboration since 1985. Hero ends with a thoughtful appraisal of how cooperation between the two might more fruitfully develop as ever smaller minorities of Louisianans continue to speak French. Co-published with the Tulane University Series in Political Science.

A classic reference book that has been used by millions all over the world, Roget’s International Thesaurus is the product of more than a century and a half of continual expansion, reorganization, and improvement. Today this book is not only the most time-tested and bestselling thesaurus ever, but, newly revised, it is also the most up-to-date and comprehensive reflection of the English language as it is currently used. The revolutionary achievement of Dr. Peter Mark Roget’s first edition in 1852 was the development of a brand-new principle: the arrangement of words and phrases according to their meanings. Dr. Roget’s system brings together in one place all the terms associated with a single thought or concept; it allows a wide-ranging survey of language within a book of relatively modest size, without the space-consuming repetitions that so severely limit the scope of thesauruses arranged in a dictionary format with A-to-Z entries. This brilliant organization makes Roget’s International Thesaurus both the most efficient word finder and a cutting-edge aid in stimulating thought, organizing ideas, and writing and speaking more clearly and effectively. This revised and updated seventh edition features thousands of new words and phrases, including the newest slang words and expressions that color and inform everyday language. At the same time, it retains all the hallmarks that have made Roget’s International Thesaurus the most popular word reference book next to the dictionary.
