Around 1900, the southern states embarked on a series of political campaigns aimed at disfranchising large numbers of voters. By 1908, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia had succeeded in depriving virtually all African Americans, and a large number of lower-class whites, of the voting rights they had possessed since Reconstruction--rights they would not regain for over half a century. Struggle for Mastery is the most complete and systematic study to date of the history of disfranchisement in the South. After examining the origins and objectives of disfranchisement, Michael Perman traces the process as it unfolded state by state. Because he examines each state within its region-wide context, he is able to identify patterns and connections that have previously gone unnoticed. Broadening the context even further, Perman explores the federal government's seeming acquiescence in this development, the relationship between disfranchisement and segregation, and the political system that emerged after the decimation of the South's electorate. The result is an insightful and persuasive interpretation of this highly significant, yet generally misunderstood, episode in U.S. history.

"In this memoir, Robert Rand tells the tale of how social dancing freed him from the grip of panic disorder. Rand was a serious man, a scholarly, shy and intense perfectionist who achieved national recognition in his career. He was a senior editor on the staff of National Public Radio's All Things Considered when, in the midst of his success, panic attacks overwhelmed him. For more than two years, he suffered debilitating effects; the disease flattened his spirits and entirely stripped him of self-confidence. He crawled through his days, barely getting by." "Then Rand discovered social dancing, in particular Cajun and zydeco dance and music. Dancing became a cathartic and liberating endeavor, helping him beat back his panic disorder to gain control of his life. Rand found on the dance floor a new compelling world where absolute strangers physically embrace; a world where that embrace can turn volatile when the strangers are of different races; a romantic and passionate world, for dancing is how Rand met his wife."--Jacket.

Anxious Pleasures

Anxious Pleasures takes Franz Kafka's profoundly haunting comic novella, The Metamorphosis, and reanimates it through the vantage points of those who surround Gregor Samsa during his plight. The hysterical mother, the stern father, the faithless sister, and their pragmatic cook all speak up here, while Olsen introduces new characters like the writer downstairs, day-dreaming the narrative he may someday compose, and a young woman in contemporary London reading Kafka's slim book for the first time. In the tradition of Michael Cunningham's The Hours and John Gardner's Grendel, Olsen's novel not only represents a collaboration with a ghost, but also a celebration, augmentation, and complication of a momentously influential text.
