Biomedical Engineering in Gastrointestinal Surgery is a combination of engineering and surgical experience on the role of engineering in gastrointestinal surgery. There is currently no other book that combines engineering and clinical issues in this field, while engineering is becoming more and more important in surgery. This book is written to a high technical level, but also contains clear explanations of clinical conditions and clinical needs for engineers and students. Chapters covering anatomy and physiology are comprehensive and easy to understand for non-surgeons, while technologies are put into the context of surgical disease and anatomy for engineers. The authors are the two most senior members of the Institute for Minimally Invasive Interdisciplinary Therapeutic Interventions (MITI), which is pioneering this kind of collaboration between engineers and clinicians in minimally invasive surgery. MITI is an interdisciplinary platform for collaborative work of surgeons, gastroenterologists, biomedical engineers and industrial companies with mechanical and electronic workshops, dry laboratories and comprehensive facilities for animal studies as well as a fully integrated clinical "OR of the future". Written by the head of the Institute of Minimally Invasive Interdisciplinary Therapeutic Intervention (TUM MITI) which focusses on interdisciplinary cooperation in visceral medicine Provides medical and anatomical knowledge for engineers and puts technology in the context of surgical disease and anatomy Helps clinicians understand the technology, and use it safely and efficiently

Introduction and guidebook to those pioneers, most of them surgeons, who attempted to help their patients by extending the boundaries of their own knowledge and experience. Before Pasteur and Lister, surgery from the oesophagus to the anal canal was extremely dangerous due to ignorance of the causes of infection. Until the advent of anesthesia in 1846 such surgery was limited to the superficial, for example, drainage of abscesses, the redution of hernias and, sometimes, their repair. Contemporary surgery is the product of the insights and accomplishments of our historical mentors of the subsequent 150 years.

The introduction of functional endoscopic sinus surgery in the early 1980s revolutionized the surgical treatment of sinonasal disorders. This procedure also produced unexpected surgical complications. The surgical creation of drainage sites in the paranasal sinuses brings a concomitant risk of injuries to the vital surrounding structures of the skull base, the brain, and the orbit. The development of computer-aided navigation systems has added another helpful tool to the operating surgeon's armamentarium. This issue is devoted to image-guided tools, techniques, and outcomes of the guided surgery.

Advance your surgical expertise with Atlas of Advanced Operative Surgery! This new resource picks up where other surgical references leave off, providing highly visual, step-by-step guidance on more than 100 advanced and complex procedures in both general and subspecialty areas. Visualize every procedure thanks to more than 1,000 illustrations, most in full color - including intraoperative photos, beautifully illustrated color drawings that highlight the relevant anatomy and techniques in specific surgeries, and radiologic images that help you identify variations in anatomy prior to surgery. Grasp each procedure and review key steps quickly with a consistent, highly focused, bulleted format. See the advantages and disadvantages of variations in technique with a Pro/Con section written by expert surgeons. Focus on the advanced practice skills that are of particular value to those poised to begin practice, as well as surgeons who are already in practice. Benefit from the masterful guidance of Dr. Vijay Khatri, a respected expert and experienced mentor of trainees, junior faculty, and community surgeons. Learn new procedures or refresh your memory on operative details prior to surgery with an easy-to-follow, step-by-step format: pre-operative preparation, operative technique, position, incision, main dissection, closure, alternative technical approaches (with pros/cons), and post-operative care.
