Colour has fascinated man ever since he was able to see a coloured object. When Perkin manufactured the fast synthetic dye in 1857, little was known of the chemistry of dyes and about dependence of colour on structure. The principles concerning this relationship emerged over the next two decades. The principles are now fully described using the molecular orbital theory. This book deals with all aspects of the chemistry of colour.

Jmol is an interactive viewer for molecular models in the computer. This book aims to be both a tutorial for beginners and a handbook for reference and deepening for more skilled users. It may be of profit for instructors, content authors, students, researchers, and administrators or designers of information portals. The book is organized in sections for a gradual learning curve. It starts with the simplest and most frequent commands and then advances into the occasional, specific and more complex ones. There are sections addressed to those who only need occasional and basic use, another that explains how to take advantage of the command language -split into two levels and further continued on vol. 2- and, finally, a section only needed by those interested on preparing web pages to present models to others. A command index is included, as well as a glossary and a listing of reference addresses in internet, including that of the companion website created for this book.

While acid-base indicators continue to find new applications in an ever-widening range of scientific disciplines, there is no current book that focuses entirely on the subject, nor one that brings together the relevant advances that have evolved over the last three decades. The Handbook of Acid-Base Indicators compiles the most up-to-date, comprehensive information on over 200 water-based and solvent-based indicators into a single source. Organized alphabetically, entries include: common name, other names, CA index name, CAS registry number, Merck index number, chemical structure, chemical/dye class, molecular formula, molecular weight, pH range, color change at pH, pKa, physical form, solubility, UV-visible (Lambda-max), melting point, and boiling point. This resource also offers unique coverage including protocols for synthesizing indicator compounds; data relating to adverse effects, toxicity, and safety; and major applications for each indicator. The Handbook of Acid-Base Indicators contains practical information for widespread applications that include semiconductors, displays, nanotechnology, OLEDs, fuel cells, sensors, security, surface coatings, adhesives, insecticides, agricultural chemicals, textiles, packaging, cosmetics, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, and the detection and treatment of disease.

Dyes And Pigments

Author: Ahmet Gürses
Editor: Springer
ISBN: 3319338927
File Size: 78,63 MB
Format: PDF, Kindle

In this book the authors go back to basics to describe the structural differences between dyes and pigments, their mechanisms of action, properties and applications. They set the scene by explaining the reasons behind these differences and show how dyes are predominately organic compounds that dissolve or react with substrates, whereas pigments are (predominantly) finely ground inorganic substances that are insoluble and therefore have a different mode of coloring. They also describe the role of functional groups and their effect on dyeing ability, contrasting this with the way in which pigments cause surface reflection (or light absorption) depending on their chemical and crystalline structure and relative particle size. The book explores the environmental impact of dyes in a section that covers the physical, chemical, toxicological, and ecological properties of dyes and how these are used to assess their effect on the environment and to estimate whether a given product presents a potential hazard. Lastly, it assesses how, in addition to their traditional uses in the textile, leather, paper, paint and varnish industries, dyes and pigments are indispensable in other fields such as microelectronics, medical diagnostics, and in information recording techniques.
