Excerpt from The Psychology of Social Class One of the most terrible features of World War II was undoubtedly the system of inverse selection followed by the Nazi régime. In the past - even in 1914 - 1arge-scale wars consisted of vast, indifferent thinnings-out of fighting forces usually engaged in battling for position and wearing the other side down. But in this war those with the finest character, judgment and integrity in the occupied countries singled themselves out by their desire not to give up the struggle, and the enemy were able to decimate an élite as they liked; and we now know in what numbers and by what methods they did so. In this way scholars who were not men of action by vocation found themselves connected with the resistance movement through their moral strength, the continuity and uprightness of their thinking and the courageous support they gave to the actual fighters and, first and foremost, to their own close relations. So Maurice Halbwachs, of the College de France, arrested by the Gestapo in Paris in July 1944, died in February 1945 at Buchenwald. His friends did not abandon hope for a long time. They could not bear to think that a family which had already been cruelly and directly struck down three times Should again suffer. But Maurice Halbwachs could not withstand the methodical application of hardships. One of his sons, who had been arrested shortly before him, and whom he joined in the camp, was with him as he lay dying. Selection for secondary education at 11-plus still arouses widespread controversy; and the psychological techniques which are employed, such as intelligence and attainments tests, are often criticised. Originally published in 1957, under the auspices of the British Psychological Society, a group of psychologists, experienced in this field, tried to present a balanced survey of the situation at the time. They show that the real problems of secondary schooling cannot be solved by simple administrative changes; they arise from historical causes, from the class structure of English society and the educational and vocational ambitions of parents. Psychology has studied the development and differentiation of children’s abilities and interests with age, and thus throws light on the need for, and the consequences of, streaming children in different classes or schools, and the value of alternative systems such as the comprehensive school. Selection at 11-plus, it is admitted, does have harmful effects on teaching in the junior school and produces much emotional strain, though these effects are often exaggerated. It was, in fact, accurate for some ninety per cent of children; yet the implications of its inevitable inaccuracy for some pupils cannot be ignored. The functions, and the value, of intelligence and attainments tests and the essay are examined, and full consideration given to the use of teachers’ estimates of suitability and other techniques. "The present Introduction to Social Psychology represents an attempt at a more synthetic type of treatment of the field than has ordinarily been given. It seems to the writer that the time has arrived when "schools" of social psychology may properly be regarded as obsolete and the subject as a whole may be presented systematically. In a sense social psychology overlaps a very large portion of social science and of psychology and education. In this respect it is central to all psychological and social science disciplines. This fact necessarily renders the content of social psychology voluminous. It is no longer possible to treat this subject adequately in small compass. The text-books which have so far appeared, although for the most part excellent from their several viewpoints, are nevertheless but partial treatments. So notably true is this that there exists a marked controversy as to what properly constitutes social psychology. In Part I of this volume an attempt has been made to bring this controversy into relief for the purpose of enabling the reader to see the subject as a whole. Originally the writer intended to publish this volume in five parts to make the synthetic treatment more pronounced. But the length of the volume as thus planned was prohibitive and it was decided to change the plan somewhat. The synthetic character of the treatment has been retained, but the detailed presentation of the process of the development of personality and of self and social consciousness has been reserved for a second volume. The present volume treats the subject from the standpoint of the more objective factors which integrate the personality and its responses in a social environment. Throughout it has been the intention of the writer, not only to make the treatment complete in itself, but to keep the presentation on such a level that the volume can be used successfully as a second book in social theory, following directly upon the introductory course in sociology in departments sociology. If the approach to the social sciences is a psychological one, the organization of this volume should make it available as an introduction to the first course in sociology, economics, politics, and more advanced courses in history and literature, in those departments which care to use it in this way.
