A gorilla shrewdly sells back a missing key chain to the highest bidder. An orangutan picks a lock to let himself out of his zoo enclosure and two elephants adopt a tag-team strategy to keep their handlers from putting them back into theirs. In The Parrot's Lament, noted environmentalist Eugene Linden offers more than one hundred true anecdotes about animal acts of cooperation, heroism, escape—even tales of deception or manipulation of human beings. Drawing on the first-person experiences of veterinarians, field biologists, researchers, and trainers, Linden has compiled a warmly entertaining and powerfully persuasive argument for animal consciousness that, while not human, far exceeds what humans usually grant animals. Scientifically sound and emotionally compelling, The Parrot's Lament contains remarkable stories that are sure to resonate with animal lovers, turning skeptics everywhere into believers.

Orangutans, together with chimpanzees and gorillas, are our closest living relatives. Photographic and Descriptive Musculoskeletal Atlas of Orangutans, the first photographic and descriptive musculoskeletal atlas of the genus Pongo, adopts the same format as the photographic atlases of Gorilla, Pan and Hylobates previously published by the same authors. These four books are part of a series of monographs that will set out the comparative and phylogenetic context of the gross anatomy and evolutionary history of the soft tissue morphology of modern humans and their closest relatives. The present atlas, which includes detailed high-quality photographs of musculoskeletal structures from most anatomical regions of the body as well as textual information about the attachments, innervation, function and weight of the respective muscles, is based on dissections of five orangutans and on an extensive review of the literature. It provides an updated review of the anatomical variations within orangutans as well as an extensive list of the synonyms used in the literature to designate the structures we discuss. It will be of interest to students, teachers and researchers studying primatology, comparative anatomy, functional morphology, zoology, and physical anthropology and to medical students, doctors and researchers who are curious about the origin, evolution, homology and variations of the musculoskeletal structures of modern humans.

In 2012, a documentary about an Orangutan in Paris, Nanette, enthralled viewers the world over with an intimate story about the life of primates in captivity. Nanette is one of four orangutans in the renowned Jardin des Plantes Zoo, originally populated in 1792 by animals from the royal menagerie at Versailles. Wattana joined Nennette at the zoo in 1998, along with her brother Vandu. Born at the Antwerp Zoo, by the age of three and a half months the siblings were put into the care of their primate cousins, the zookeepers. It was in Paris that Wattana met Chris Herzfeld, and the origins of this book sparked. Herzfeld discovered that Wattana could tie and untie knots, fine motor skills the discovery of which made quite a splash in the primatological world and the project shares the character of this remarkable species (and great apes in general), using Wattana s life to traces the history of orangutans from the first to arrive in Europe in 1776 to the Jardin s inhabitants today. Orangutans in the wild are predicted to disappear by 2030, but a book like this may help ensure that Wattana does not become the orangutan equivalent of Martha, the last passenger pigeon. Opening the door for readers into the intimate world of captive primates their habits, techniques and human know-how Wattana can drive an iPad, likes tea, sews, and draws on paper. The work is focused primarily on great apes in captivity, and their amazing plasticity. "

Primates in Perspective is the first edited volume to offer a comprehensive overview of primatology since 1987. Forty-four original essays--by fifty-nine leading researchers in the field today-- provide wide-ranging and contemporary coverage of all of the major areas of primatology. Arranged in six sections, the text begins with an introduction to primatology and a review of the natural history of the major taxonomic groups within the order Primates. It goes on to cover methodologies and research design for both field and captive settings; primate reproduction; primate ecology and conservation and their roles in the daily lives of primates; and such aspects of social behavior and intelligence as communication, learning, and cognition. The volume ends with a concluding chapter by the editors that discusses the future of primatological research. Ideal for introductory primatology courses, Primates in Perspective can also be used in upper-division behavior and conservation courses. Additionally, it is an invaluable reference tool for primate researchers.
