The Dialogue of the Dogs is an inspired work of psychological observation by the master of the picaresque novel. In it, Cervantes displays all the clarity and warmth that marks the rich prose of Don Quixote. Given the gift of speech for a day, two dogs set about satirizing humans, their supposed superiors. In an exchange reminiscent of the ancient Greek Dialogues, they recount their experiences under their various masters. But whether butcher, constable, merchant, or gypsy, each is decried as corrupt to the core. Through the scathing Berganza and the critical Scipio, Cervantes delivers an ingenious critique of the morality of 16th-century Spain, and a timeless and telling portrayal of the heart of man. Author of the universally known Don Quixote, Miguel de Cervantes is Spain’s greatest writer.

"This book," says the author, "wrote itself - it was no effort." Set out like a theatre programme, with Prologue, Action, Finale and Curtain Calls, these are lively, often funny and sometimes poignant accounts of Sara's conversations (and occasionally hair-raising escapades) with her beloved rescue dog, a lurcher called Sati. Sara describes her chequered history with dogs of various personalities before Sati walked into her life. She recounts her adventures with Sati and shares their thoughts and dialogues right up to the present day. Every word is true; Annette Crosbie, famous champion of rescue greyhounds, describes it as a "charming book - a must-read for any of us who have shared our lives with a dog." With colour photographs, and a series of exquisitely amusing line drawings by dog-adoring professional illustrator and animal cartoonist Ali Wylie, this is the perfect gift for any dog lover - whether or not they listen to The Archers! Sara Coward is best known to millions of BBC Radio 4 listeners as Caroline Sterling in The Archers. Over the years, Caroline's colourful career has attracted labels from "the thinking man's totty" to "the Ambridge bike"! Caroline has appeared in episodes with Princess Margaret, The Duke of Westminster and recently Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. A professional actor since she left university, Sara has worked extensively in theatres throughout the UK and is currently touring Wicked Women - a celebration of outrageous womanhood - with Sunny Ormonde, the famous voice of Lilian Bellamy. Sara also records audio books and film narratives, presents popular after-dinner entertainments and makes the occasional foray into TV. She has often been asked to write scripts; this is the first time she has succumbed, simply because her conversations with Sati, her beloved rescue dog, took on a life of their own.

A primatologist and a humanist together explore the meaning of being a “human animal” Humanness is typically defined by our capacity for language and abstract thinking. Yet decades of research led by the primatologist Sue Savage-Rumbaugh has shown that chimpanzees and bonobos can acquire human language through signing and technology. Drawing on this research, Dialogues of the Human Ape brings Savage-Rumbaugh into conversation with the philosopher Laurent Dubreuil to explore the theoretical and practical dimensions of what being a “human animal” means. In their use of dialogue as the primary mode of philosophical and scientific inquiry, the authors transcend the rigidity of scientific and humanist discourses, offering a powerful model for the dissemination of speculative hypotheses and open-ended debates grounded in scientific research. Arguing that being human is an epigenetically driven process rather than a fixed characteristic rooted in genetics or culture, this book suggests that while humanness may not be possible in every species, it can emerge in certain supposedly nonhuman species. Moving beyond irrational critiques of ape consciousness that are motivated by arrogant, anthropocentric views, Dialogues on the Human Ape instead takes seriously the continuities between the ape mind and the human mind, addressing why language matters to consciousness, free will, and the formation of the “human animal” self.

Posthuman Dialogues In International Relations

Posthumanism represents a significant new research direction both for International Relations and the social sciences. It emerges from questions about inter-species relations which challenge dominant perceptions of what it means to be human. Rather than seeing the human species as ‘in nature’ posthumanist thinking considers the species as ‘of nature’. The work of posthumanist thinkers has sought to dispute accepted notions of what it means to be human, raising profound questions about our relations with the rest of nature. The volume commences with an overview of the influence thinkers have had on the development of posthumanist thinking. Key ideas in International Relations are interrogated and reconceptualised and specific case studies are presented with a focus on inter-species relations. The work allows for a consideration of the limits of the posthumanist move and provides space for critics to argue that such an approach opens the discipline up to a biological determinism, and that a focus on inter-human relations should mark the boundaries of the discipline. The essays collected in this volume provide an overview of contributions from posthumanist thinkers with the particular intention of providing a succinct introduction to the area and should appeal to scholars and students in Politics, IR and philosophy.

From one of the finest nature writers at work in America today-a lyrical, dramatic, illuminating tour of the hidden domain of wild animals. Whether recalling the experience of being chased through the Grand Canyon by a bighorn sheep, swimming with sharks off the coast of British Columbia, watching a peregrine falcon perform acrobatic stunts at 200 miles per hour, or engaging in a tense face-off with a mountain lion near a desert waterhole, Craig Childs captures the moment so vividly that he puts the reader in his boots. Each of the forty brief, compelling narratives in THE ANIMAL DIALOGUES focuses on the author's own encounter with a particular species and is replete with astonishing facts about the species' behavior, habitat, breeding, and lifespan. But the glory of each essay lies in Childs's ability to portray the sometimes brutal beauty of the wilderness, to capture the individual essence of wild creatures, to transport the reader beyond the human realm and deep inside the animal kingdom

As an unabashed dog lover, Alexandra Horowitz is naturally curious about what her dog thinks and what she knows. As a cognitive scientist she is intent on understanding the minds of animals who cannot say what they know or feel. This is a fresh look at the world of dogs -- from the dog's point of view. The book introduces the reader to the science of the dog -- their perceptual and cognitive Abilities -- and uses that introduction to draw a picture of what it might be like to bea dog. It answers questions no other dog book can -- such as: What is a dog's sense of time? Does she miss me? Want friends? Know when she's been bad? Horowitz's journey, and the insights she uncovered from studying her own dog, Pumpernickel, allowed her to understand her dog better, and appreciate her more through that understanding. The reader will be able to do the same with their own dog. This is not another dog training book. Instead, Inside of a Dogwill allow dog owners to look at their pets' behaviour in a different, and revealing light, enabling them to understand their dogs and enjoy their relationship even more.

Liza Bear's Beyond the Frame: Dialogues with World Filmmakers explores the world cinema of the past 25 years, and celebrates its range and diversity by paying detailed attention to the creative process. It contains roughly 50 interviews with, and short pieces on directors and other artistic collaborators from over twenty countries, primarily in Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. Liza Bear's incisive interviews provide immediate and rapid insights into directors' key themes and concerns. Her continual attention to bodies of work also allows the directors to explain what guided them in their respective movements towards and away from certain themes and genres. While directors are notorious for keeping their cards close to their chest, most of the interviews provided here have a stunning degree of openness and honesty, perhaps because many of these voices have had such a hard time getting heard in the first place. The dialogues examine, among other issues: the sources of the scripts, how the films get made and, where possible, the socioeconomic and cultural conditions under which the directors have worked, from Argentina to Iran to Romania. In addition to the interviews, there is an introduction by noted author Robin Andersen that elucidates recurrent themes arising out of the discussions, a foreword by Laurence Kardish, Film Curator at the Museum of Modern Art, filmographies, and numerous photographs.
