On the morning of October 4, 1969, 20-year-old Diane Linkletter died after she fell from a window of her sixth floor apartment in West Hollywood. Because she was the daughter of famed Hollywood radio and television personality Art Linkletter, the media jumped on the story and, based on preliminary their findings, labeled her death a suicide that was caused by her taking LSD. In subsequent reports, Diane Linkletter was painted as having a serious drug problem dating back to her early teens, as well as being severely despondent. Having never believed that Diane had a serious drug problem or that her death was a suicide, her former boyfriend and fianc´┐Ż from high school, who today is a noted biographer and investigative journalist, reveals in this book the people and events that finally dispel the notion that Diane ever had a serious drug problem and that her being emotionally despondent led to her taking her own life. (*Note: the content of this book was originally a four-installment magazine article of approximately 18,000 words. As such, this is a small book).

This work covers 840 intentional suicide cases initially reported in Daily Variety (the entertainment industry's trade journal), but also drawing attention from mainstream news media. These cases are taken from the ranks of vaudeville, film, theatre, dance, music, literature (writers with direct connections to film), and other allied fields in the entertainment industry from 1905 through 2000. Accidentally self-inflicted deaths are omitted, except for a few controversial cases. It includes the suicides of well-known personalities such as actress Peg Entwistle, who is the only person to ever commit suicide by jumping from the top of the Hollywood Sign, Marilyn Monroe and Dorothy Dandridge, who are believed to have overdosed on drugs, and Richard Farnsworth and Brian Keith, who shot themselves to end the misery of terminal cancer. Also mentioned, but in less detail, are the suicides of unknown and lesser-known members of the entertainment industry. Arranged alphabetically, each entry covers the person's personal and professional background, method of suicide, place of burial, and, in some instances, includes actual statements taken from the suicide note.

The deaths of film celebrities are sometimes even more fascinating than their lives. Hollywood visitors and natives are often drawn to sites of tragedy involving the rich, the beautiful, and the notorious. This book can make finding those locations simple. These sixteen driving tours cover over 500 sites relating to celebrity deaths and scandals. Each tour covers a specific area of the world's film capital, from Sunset Strip to Bel Air, giving specific directions to each location on the tour. Sites include famous graves, like Rudolph Valentino's, where the Lady in Black made her annual pilgrimage for thirty years; houses and businesses said to be haunted by those as famous in death as they were in life; locations of famous murders and deaths, from William Desmond Taylor to John Belushi; and scandalous locations like the infamous Francis Brothel. Tips for safe and enjoyable touring are also included, and the tours allow everyone from the mildly curious to the completely morbid to find some of Hollywood's darkest corners.
