A history of Catholic social thought Many Americans assume that the Catholic Church is inherently conservative, based on its stances on abortion, contraception, and divorce. Yet there is a longstanding tradition of progressive Catholic movements in the United States that have addressed a variety of issues from labor, war, immigration, and environmental protection, to human rights, women’s rights, exploitive development practices, and bellicose foreign policies. These Catholic social movements have helped to shift the Church from an institution that had historically supported incumbent governments and political elites to a Church that has increasingly sided with the vulnerable and oppressed. This book provides a concise history of progressively oriented Catholic Social Thought, which conveys the Catholic Church’s position on a variety of social justice concerns. Sharon Erickson Nepstad introduces key papal encyclicals and other church documents, showing how lay Catholics in the United States have put these ideas into practice through a creative and sometimes provocative political engagement. Nepstad also explores how these progressive movements have pressured the religious hierarchy to respond to pressing social issues, such as women’s ordination, conscription, and the morality of nuclear deterrence policies. Catholic Social Activism vividly depicts how these progressive movements have helped to shape the religious landscape of the United States, and how they have provoked controversy and debate among Catholics and non-Catholics alike.

Assimilation of universal laws is the first key to manhood. Sacrificing the ephemeral to the eternal is the final key. Sacrificing others is a crime against Nature, for sacrifice is always a voluntary, not an enforced, act. Sacrifice proper is unselfish love of humanity in person and in secret. Defiling the altars of gods with blood is worse than murder. Four Metaphysical Keys to Theosophy: 1. Parabrahman or Absoluteness is the One and Only Reality. 2. Mulaprakriti or Noumenon of Matter is a veil thrown over Parabrahman. 3. Logos or Word is Divine Thought Concealed. 4. Fohat or Light of Logos is Divine Thought Revealed. The three Fundamental Propositions of The Secret Doctrine defined and summed up. How The One Becomes Two Ones: Parabrahman and Logos, and then Three. And how The Three Live within The One. Allusions to Logos in the Bhagavad Gita examined in the Light of Theosophy. Deity is Life and Law, and vice versa. Compassion is the Divine Law of Universal Sympathy and Sacrifice. Overseen by Spiritual Intelligences above, Compassion is enacted by the Intelligence of Nature and Her dual forces below. Deity is Unerring Karman or Abstract Nature: the Mind and Soul of the Universe. The One Eternal Life and Law, triple in its manifestation, is underpinned by the three Propositions of The Secret Doctrine. Each proposition is examined according to the Bhagavad-Gita, and in the light of Theosophy. Narada and Krishna speak with One Voice. Narada is the Deva Rishi of Occultism. He impelled animal man towards intellectual freedom. Narada’s aphorisms on Devotional Love and Krishna’s precepts to Arjuna are impossible to tell apart. A Philaletheians’ recension of Narada Bhakti Sutra, divided in nine parts: O Lanoo, listen to the Voice of the Heart Doctrine. Give it all away or you will lose it. Let your life become an example to unbelievers. True life can only be found through Devotion to All. With subdued heart place all thy works on Me. Rise above the trappings of personal life. Feel the Great Heart within. With unfettered mind throw every deed on Me. Intoxicate yourself with the right attitude and ethic. Avataras are our Watchers and Guardians. Prince Siddhartha Gautama locked mankind within one embrace. Jesus was a martyred Adept, not an Avatara. The real Christ is Krishna: Internal Light, not external symbols. The “still small voice” is the Heart and Pulse of the Universe. She is the Voice of the Great Sacrifice. “The Voice of the Silence” and “Light on the Path”: two books, One Voice: Who speaks with a “still small voice”? Where is The Voice? When will The Voice speak? Where will The Voice speak? Under what conditions? What will The Voice say? How will I know if The Voice is genuine? What will I learn? With twenty-one tips for Pilgrim Souls: 1. Rise above the Fog of Separateness. 2. Seek Darkness with the Lamp of Faith. 3. Confirm Faith by Reason and Experience. 4. Validate Imagination by Faith and Will. 5. Lose yourself in the Sea of Devotion. 6. Realise your Ideals. 7. Live your Dreams. 8. Axe the Ashvattha Tree. 9. Slay your Mind. 10. Charity begins at home? 11. Be wise! Restrain thyself! 12. Head learning versus soul wisdom. 13. The false is nothing but an imitation of the true. 14. Act in person but Impersonally. 15. Thoughts and emotions are one and the same. 16. Action speaks louder than words. 17. Higher versus lower altruism. 18. Charity is a debt of honour. 19. Merge self in Self. 20. Seek out the fifth way of Loving. 21. Listen to the Clarion Call. Followed by four parting thoughts: Master thyself and protect others. Despise the life that only seeks its own. Let thy pulses beat to heaven’s own music. Let us be true to each other. And twelve Appendices on: A. Theosophists described metaphysically and ethically. B. Action, Renunciation, and their endless variants. C. At the threshold of two paths. D. Parabrahman: aspects, epithets, synonyms. E. Mulaprakriti: aspects, epithets, synonyms. F. Logos: aspects, epithets, synonyms. G. Fohat: aspects, epithets, synonyms. H. AUM: definitions, derivatives, parallels. I. Conscience and Consciousness. J. A Marriage made in Heaven. K. Esoteric Astrology – Vol. 2: Houses Seven, Eight and Nine The Theory, Interpretation and Practice. This publication takes a new and revitalised look at astrology. It is simple to understand, yet remains a powerful tool, capable of providing a solid foundation for the comprehension of this broad and magnificent subject. This textbook, like most of Dr. Baker’s printed books, eBooks and DVDs, enhances your studies via many charts, lists, tables and images (over 100 in this one). This major work is a very comprehensive introduction for those who want to study this subject in earnest, and for the more advanced student it will serve as an essential reference manual. In today's computer-based world it is no longer necessary to spend hours calculating a horoscope when the most modest PCs can do it in seconds, and with 100% accuracy! Consequently the needless paraphernalia, usually associated with learning astrology, has been stripped away. Emphasis is placed on the application of astrology to the unique problems of the modern world, its use as a method of revealing purpose and meaning in life, and ultimately as a key to the psychosynthesis of personality. The horoscope is described in comprehensive detail, with special attention given to the esoteric ruling planets of the zodiac signs, which are more relevant than orthodox rulers in the charts of spiritually-minded people. The new rulers also accommodate the immense changes in external conditions and inner consciousness that have occurred in the last hundred years and are related to a new range of experience which the brain registers as the externa of the modern world. The significance of karma is represented for it gives dramatic effect to our daily actions, and the third factor of esoteric psychology, lying beyond our understanding of heredity and environment, is given full prominence. This integrative and enriching work can be read alone, as a fascinating introduction and foundation to the New Astrology, or can be followed up with the author's extensive range of astrological books and video tapes, audio lectures and the all-embracing Dictionary of Astrology for the 21st Century. Together they provide a complete system for the professional and novice alike, containing efficient and extraordinary techniques of interpretation which have never been used before and which halve the time required to assimilate and practise astrology. A special note to eBook readers: This volume contains a large amount of astrological glyphs embedded within the text. The sales page “preview” might not be able to show these but your reading device will as long as you leave the “Font” settings at “Original” or “Publisher Font”. Font size adjustments work fine with the glyphs. To allow the greatest number of reading devices to display this eBook, we used the “free flowing” layout and show the glyphs right behind the text they belong to.

C. Scott Littleton's memoir of growing up in Hermosa Beach, California offers a unique and intimate portrait of life on the beach during World War II. 2500 Strand focuses on the years the Littleton clan occupied the beach front property of 2500 Strand. This touching personal history elucidates how one American boy saw the events of a world in peril: from the news of France's capitulation to Germany in 1940, to the tumultuous years in the wake of Pearl Harbor, the underlying war hysteria of Japanese internment camps and nightly air raid drills, and a first-hand account of the famous and unexplained "Battle of Los Angeles." With his typical scholarly insight, attention to detail, and deep love of history, Littleton's memories are unforgettable.
