Don’t Tell Me Not to Ask Why, Samantha King Holmes’s second solo poetry collection following her bestselling Born to Love, Cursed to Feel, is a mirror that reflects our honest truths. Holmes’s poems are like little stories, hooking readers while navigating issues like body image, family relationships, loneliness, failed relationships, and finding belonging. Don’t Tell Me Not to Ask Why is a call to introspection, a demand for honesty, and an affirmation of second chances.

These reflections on my terminal cancer have only one purpose in mind: to bring together those who would heal. and those who would be healed. And to preserve protect and prolong life, hold it sacred against all impediments and anyone who would have it otherwise. They mirror the human predicament reflected in a single heart, are written with no intent to harm, and hold everybody harmless in an effort to save lives. Some of the names have been altered to protect the innocent, while others have been used with their permission. Everything written and implied explicitly. or implicitly, is solely the perception of the author. The story of my life struggling with the cancer in me and the cancer out there as I call it, that would have had me dead before my time, is an odyssey that allows one to look into oneself. The fragility and insouciance of human nature is terrifying, disheartening and inconceivable at times, but nonetheless allows one to transcend it if one has the courage and tenacity to survive against all odds. Thats what this story is all about. I dedicate this book to all those who would unstintingly heal, knowing what cannot be known. hold life sacred and seek this truth so as to transcend themselves and act with compassion. humility and unerring faith, to help others survive.

While in a medically induced coma, it was difficult to know what was real or imagined. The injuries were horrific and life-threatening; recovery was a roller coaster ride of emotions lasting a period of four years. The coma, the morphine dreams, MRSA, and the unexpected Oxycontin withdrawal have left haunting memories, which have been explicitly detailed within the pages of this book. Hospital stays were numerous throughout the four years. Being disabled and helpless in taking care of normal, everyday functions was disheartening in and of itself. Living in different nursing homes at the fairly young age of fifty-six was both a wake-up call and actually enjoyable. The elderly have so much to offer, even though they are in a nursing home. History is alive in the memories of these people. They are wonderful to listen to. The opportunity to meet and hear their different stories was a great pleasure. It was both an awful and an amazing experience.

My recipe for happiness was simple: Keep your man by your side, keep your game face on, and if at all possible, keep a Coach bag in your hand. You should look happy and vibrant. People treat you better when they think you have money, or are beautiful. Besides, if you keep up the front, they never really know how bad you feel ... Chantell Meyers figures she's got her life together. After all, she's envied for her successful, high-paying executive job; spending all the money and wearing all the clothes she could ever want; and a just-too-perfect fiance, Eric. Sure, she'd be the first to admit she's never really at peace with herself. And she knows it's been way too long since she set foot in church-or thought much about her relationship with God. But Chantell learned long ago, when her beloved mother died, that if you can't forget your pain, the very next best thing to do is to hide it. Little by little, she has started to believe that looking and living good counts more -- and hurts a lot less -- than being real. Then suddenly her father has a near-fatal heart attack-and Chantell gets a major reality check. She promises God she will try to be a better person if her father pulls through. Yet it isn't long before her good intentions begin unraveling her "good life" in the worst way. Before she knows it, she's facing big-time betrayal in her personal life and a major meltdown at work. And when Keith Talbit, a childhood acquaintance, unexpectedly comes back into her life, she finds herself looking longingly at a successful, good-looking Christian man secure in himself and his walk-just the kind of man she's sure she's not worthy to love. Reeling from mega-drama and more bad news, this dedicated shopper must now look to God-and back into her past-to find out how she wants to spend the rest of her life. It will take everything she didn't think she had to put her life in God's hands...and truly "have it all."

I’m Brayden Cooper and I’m just an average guy who found himself in a situation not at all average. Based on a true story, I will reveal to you state secrets, twisted politics, a few crooked cops, the negligence of the legal aid office, and the emotional battles of going to prison an innocent man. My faith in God has never been tested like it has been in the story I’m about to tell. All names have been changed, as ordered by a federal judge, to protect the identity of the cowards who fear the truth. Much of this story has never before been told. I promised myself an uncensored story of truths and I kept that promise, no matter who hurts as a result. I will, within this book, hold accountable those who made me hurt and have never taken responsibility. Although I went to prison for a crime I did not commit, I am not innocent. I am guilty of being blind to warning signs right in front of my face. I am guilty of not doing more to help. I am guilty of being fooled, of being a fool. This book is not for the faint of heart.

Between Their World And Ours

Autism has reached epidemic proportions. The latest studies suggest that as many as one in 150 children ages ten and younger may be affected by autism---a total of 300,000 children in the United States alone. Adults included, there are more than a million people in the United States suffering from autistic disorders. Since autism has had a bleak prognosis, and since the isolation of autistic children is so painful to parents, Karen Zelan's accounts of her breakthroughs with autistic children in Between Their World and Ours present a particularly hopeful perspective. Zelan illustrates how diagnostic labels reflect the preconceptions and prejudices of the diagnostician, but reveal nothing about the unique person who carries the label and his potential as a human being. Describing nine of the forty-five autists with whom she has worked, Zelan documents how psychotherapy with autistic youth helps them to overcome their problems in communicating, playing, feeling, thinking, and interacting with people more companionably. Her riveting narratives, showing her growing understanding of her young patients, capture how it is to be autistic. She describes the ways these young people meet the challenges of being the way the are. Her work demonstrates how the social context in which autistic children find themselves can make a significant difference in their development, their self-esteem, and their ability to think through problems in living. Zelan, a gifted and intuitive psychotherapist, shows how the autist's sense of self emerges during childhood. She details how these autistic children's first friendships originate, the pitfalls and pleasures they experience in relating to their peers, their dreams, and their fears of social contact. These real-life stories reveal what worked with autistic children and why. Zelan offers prescriptive suggestions for parents and teachers based on her discoveries, demonstrating humane ways of dealing with the often troubling problems of autism and of closing the gap between their world and ours.
