Porous materials continue to attract considerable attention because of their wide variety of scientific and technological applications, such as catalysis, shape- and size-selective absorption and adsorption, gas storage, and electrode materials. Both research and applications of porous materials—via electroanalysis, electrosynthesis, sensing, fuel cells, capacitors, electro-optical devices, etc.—heavily rely on electrochemistry. Electrochemistry of Porous Materials focuses on generalized theoretical modeling and describes redox processes for different porous materials, assessing their electrochemical applications. Considering the large variety of materials that can be classified as porous, the text focuses on nanostructured micro- and mesoporous materials. Using this approach, the book offers a more focused and practical analysis of key porous materials that are considered relatively homogeneous from an electrochemical point of view. These include: Porous silicates and aluminosilicates Porous metal oxides and related compounds Porous polyoxometalates Metal-organic frameworks Porous carbons, nanotubes, and fullerenes Porous polymers and certain hybrid materials With its detailed presentation of advances in electrochemistry of nanostructured materials, this text specifically addresses the foundation and applications of the electrochemistry of microporous materials. It incorporates the latest breakthroughs in applied fields (development of fuel cells, supercapacitors, etc.) and fundamental research (in areas including fractal scaling, photoelectrocatalysis, magnetoelectrochemistry, etc.). Designed to make the topic accessible and understandable for researchers and graduate students working in the field of material chemistry, this volume approximates porous materials chemistry to electrochemists. Selective and streamlined, it culls a wide range of relevant and practically useful material from the extensive literature on the subject, making it an invaluable reference for readers of all levels of understanding.

Among the nanomaterials, nanoporous materials occupy a special place as they represent macroscopic objects with unique 'nanoscopic' properties but typically produced top down approach. Their applications are quite broad, from filtration, catalysis, and energy materials, to sensors and adsorbents. Here, we discuss some of such applications in the field of biosensors, electrochemistry, and fuel cell technology. We illustrate how a simple sensor for viral particles (mimicked here by MS2 bacteriophage) based on ionic conductivity through nanopores can be realized using anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membrane and a computer sound card as an input/output detector. With the current optimized system, we can achieve the low concentration detection of ~ 7pfu/mL with a working range up to ~ 2000 pfu/mL.

The editors, Lund (emeritus, organic chemistry, Aarhus U., Denmark) and Hammerich (chemistry, U. of Copenhagen), have substantially revised and expanded this basic reference work (originally edited by Bazier). There are two new chapters--on the electrochemistry of C60 compounds and electroenzymatic synthesis--and one-third of the chapters have been rewritten by new authors, these are: carbonyl compounds; anodic oxidation of oxygen-containing compounds; anodic oxidation of sulfur- and selenium-containing compounds; electrosynthesis of bioactive materials (this replaces natural products and pharmaceuticals); organoelemental compounds; reductive coupling; electrochemical partial fluorination; electrogenerated bases; industrial electroorganic chemistry; and conducting polymers. The international group of contributors are all academics in various disciplines in chemistry. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Electrochemistry is the branch of chemistry that deals with the chemical action of electricity, and the production of electricity by chemical reactions. In a world short of energy sources yet long on energy use, electrochemistry is a critical component of the mix necessary to keep the world economies growing. Electrochemistry is involved with such important applications as batteries, fuel cells, corrosion studies, hydrogen energy conversion, and bioelectricity. Research on electrolytes, cells, and electrodes is within the scope of this old but extremely dynamic field.

Recent developments in the theoretical and practical problems of porous media physics are reviewed in this volume. The main emphasis is on the interdisciplinary nature of transport phenomena in porous media study. State-of-the-art reviews and descriptions of innovative research in progress are reported. A broad spectrum of problems and techniques related to porous media physics is presented. Fundamental questions currently under investigation provide a unifying theme in this volume, helping the reader to understand the problems and research trends in the field. The first part focuses on general problems and techniques. Phenomenological aspects of averaging techniques, the hierarchy of scales that are involved in real porous media and the related scaling problems of multiphase, multicomponent transport phenomena are examined with the emphasis on providing the basic scientific background for a variety of applications. Sometimes, theory comes very close to applications, and occasionally they diverge. This timely treatise demonstrates that both is now the case in porous media physics. This volume will prove an indispensable reference source for all those interested in resolving discrepancies through innovative research work, and inspiring new advances in the field.
