Summary, Analysis & Review of Jessica Bennett’s Feminist Fight Club by Instaread Preview: Feminist Fight Club by Jessica Bennett is a guide for women to counteract behaviors and trends in the workplace that disproportionately damage their ability to succeed. Bennett’s outlook on feminism was shaped early in her career by regular meetings with other women to discuss obstacles and share their successes in what they called a “feminist fight club.” Women often encounter people whose actions directly hurt their workplace performance. This includes co-workers, often men, who appropriate their successes, interrupt them in meetings, or disproportionately assign them uncompensated, menial, and administrative tasks. Adequate responses to these behaviors avoid direct confrontation but emphasize that the woman’s treatment has been unfair or based on gender stereotypes. Women can sabotage their own success by defaulting to the stereotypical behavior that others expect. Instead of volunteering to do unpaid administrative work on top of everything else, deflecting credit for their own success to the team, or… PLEASE NOTE: This is a Summary, Analysis & Review of the book and NOT the original book. Pervasive and multidisciplinary, this insightful exploration discusses how and why this seminal work developed, and continues to grow, such a cult following. When Fight Club punched its way onto the scene a decade ago, it provided an unprecedented glimpse into the American male’s psyche and rapidly turned into a euphemism for a variety of things that should be “just understood” and not otherwise acknowledged. Key to its success is the variety of lenses through which the story can be interpreted; is it a story of male anxiety in a metrosexual world, of ritual religion in a secular age, of escape from totalitarian capitalism, or the spiritual malaise induced by technologically-oriented society? Writers, conspiracy theorists, and philosophers are among those ready to talk about Fight Club’s ability to be all these and more.

From the NPR host of The Indicator podcast and correspondent for Planet Money comes a guide for how today’s women can apply the principles of 16th-century philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli to their work lives and finally shatter the glass ceiling once and for all—perfect for fans of Feminist Fight Club, Lean In, and Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office. Women have been making strides towards equality for decades, or so we’re often told. They’ve been increasingly entering male-dominated areas of the workforce and consistently surpassing their male peers in grades, university attendance, and degrees. They’ve recently stormed the political arena with a vengeance. But despite all of this, the payoff is—quite literally—not there: the gender pay gap has held steady at about 20% since 2000. And the number of female CEOs for Fortune 500 companies has actually been declining. So why, in the age of #MeToo and #TimesUp, is the glass ceiling still holding strong? And how can we shatter it for once and for all? Stacy Vanek Smith’s advice: ask Machiavelli. Using The Prince as a guide and with charm and wit, Smith applies Renaissance politics to the 21st century, and demonstrates how women can take and maintain power in careers where they have long been cast as second-best. Based on the latest research, tips from successful women across many industries, and experiences from Smith’s own life, Machiavelli for Women is a powerful, entertaining, and inspirational guide for a new generation of successful women.

The late-twentieth-century anxiety about a 'crisis in masculinity' still persists today, particularly in English-speaking cultures. Studying Men and Masculinities offers an engaging and comprehensive overview of masculinity. Drawing on a wide range of cultural practices and texts from different genres and media, David Buchbinder examines the notion of patriarchy and the challenges to patriarchal power, including queer theory. The book considers whether crisis may in fact be built into the very structure of the masculine, and examines emergent masculinities post-9/11. Theoretical positions within the field are clearly explained and applied to real life case studies from literature, film, and television. Interspersed in each chapter are a series of questions and tasks aimed at encouraging the reader to engage her/himself in the study of masculinities in everyday life and popular culture. This topical and thought-provoking book will be an invaluable resource for students of masculinities studies, sexuality studies, cultural studies, and gender theory.

The Devil Wears Prada and Feminist Fight Club meet in the Paris finance world in Paris Jungle, a novel of a mistreated woman who decides it's time to stand up and say #MeToo. Wanda Julienne is living the dream in Paris. Until the sexual harassment starts... Wanda has it all - the perfect job, a passionate romance, and a lust for life. But when she returns to work from maternity leave, her world is turned upside down. Suddenly, everything she does is wrong, at least in the eyes of her bully of a boss. She's blamed for things she didn't do and is set up to take a very big fall. Add in a dose of unwanted sexual advances, and Wanda, who can't afford to lose her job, is trapped watching her dream life crumble around her. To make matters worse, the problems at work spill over to her personal life as she pushes away her lover and her friends, and barely has time for her newborn baby. Can Wanda survive the cut-throat world of finance and reconnect with the ones she loves to find her happy ever after in Paris? "An insider's look inside the messy world of high finance-a kind of Devil Wears Prada for international investment firms-Paris Jungle also delivers a poignant modern love story set in Paris. What's not to love?" - Award-winning author Amy Impellizzeri This novel can be read as a standalone or as part of the From Paris to Provence series. Each book in the series brings to life its own unique characters yet all books share the vibrant and captivating setting of France. Previously published as The Creepshow. Interview with the Author What was your inspiration to write Paris Jungle? I was inspired by the current situation women face in the workplace. I feel that I've experienced discrimination in the past, and most women I've spoken with say they've also experienced it at some point or another in their careers. In so many fields and on so many levels, women fight to earn the same salaries and opportunities as male counterparts. And the situation becomes particularly complicated for many women once they have children. It sounds almost like a true story But it's fictional, right? Now that's a compliment I strive to make my characters and their situations believable. This is indeed a work of fiction, but the protagonist, Wanda, is going through something many women today face, which makes the book seem pretty realistic, especially in light of the #MeToo movement. One of my favorite nonfiction books about women in the workplace and in leadership roles is Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg, CEO of Facebook. Some of the themes are heavy. Can you describe some of the lighter aspects of the book as well? Wanda rekindles a romance with her ex-boyfriend, who also is the father of her baby. Throughout the book she struggles with the usual concerns of someone in a new relationship. There is also a strong theme of friendship as Wanda seeks comfort with her best friend. What do you hope readers will take away from this novel? I hope they will take away strength to fight when faced with any sort of injustice, and hope, always hope. So this book is part of a series? Yes and no. Each novel in the From Paris to Provence series brings to life its own unique characters and can be read as a standalone, but all books share the vibrant and captivating setting of France: - A Perfumer's Secret - Paris, Rue des Martyrs - Paris Jungle If you like reading about strong female protagonists who do all they can to fight unfair working circumstances, you'll enjoy this novel. Thanks for reading
