"This book examines the techniques that Rousseau used to engage and persuade his readers. Considering several important works, including Emilie, The Discourse on Inequality, and The Social Contract, John Scott, a well-known scholar of Rousseau, explores the different rhetorical and literary strategies that he uses to interest, draw in, and persuade the reader of his ideas. Keeping in mind that Rousseau was concerned with education, understanding the relationship between his literary and rhetorical techniques and the substance of his thought is necessary to understanding Rousseau's project and who he intended to reach. Most political philosophers focus naturally on his ideas; others argue that the way he conveyed them is itself important. Scott gives us the key to understanding the significance of Rousseau's style"--

How do you write a book? Stuart Horwitz helps you do it in three drafts. Three drafts: that's all you need. - The messy draft: which is all about getting it down. - The method draft: which is all about making sense. - The polished draft: which is all about making it good. Finish Your Book in Three Drafts is for outliners who meticulously script every writing session and pantsers who pilot solely by feel. It will help you get past the fear that can land a first draft in the trashcan, and the confusion that can send a second draft into a dizzying tailspin. Because you don't want to be writing the same book for the rest of your life. You can Finish Your Book in Three Drafts provided you approach each draft in the right spirit, and know what action steps to take between drafts. With clarity, honesty, humor, and even videos, Horwitz discusses the best outlook and direction for each of the three drafts so that you can increase your efficiency, satisfaction, and engagement with both your writing process and your final product.

"Most upper-elementary, middle, and secondary students talk to perform right answers in math class, meaning most older students hardly talk at all in math class and don't learn much math because we talk to learn. In Rough Draft Math, Amanda Jansen shares the power of infusing math class with the spirit of revision. She shares the work she and teacher-collaborators have done to teach students how to share their rough ideas, knowing they can change them later"--

The social sciences are becoming datafied. The questions once considered the domain of sociologists are now answered by data scientists operating on large datasets and breaking with methodological tradition, for better or worse. The traditional social sciences, such as sociology or anthropology, are under the double threat of becoming marginalized or even irrelevant, both from new methods of research which require more computational skills and from increasing competition from the corporate world which gains an additional advantage based on data access. However, unlike data scientists, sociologists and anthropologists have a long history of doing qualitative research. The more quantified datasets we have, the more difficult it is to interpret them without adding layers of qualitative interpretation. Big Data therefore needs Thick Data. This book presents the available arsenal of new methods and tools for studying society both quantitatively and qualitatively, opening ground for the social sciences to take the lead in analysing digital behaviour. It shows that Big Data can and should be supplemented and interpreted through thick data as well as cultural analysis. Thick Big Data is critically important for students and researchers in the social sciences to understand the possibilities of digital analysis, both in the quantitative and qualitative area, and to successfully build mixed-methods approaches.

The Writer S Way

The spirit of THE WRITER'S WAY remains in the ninth edition, as do its two core principles: (1) good writing begins when writers know their audience and write for the right reasons; and (2) knowing their audience and having good reasons to write will teach users everything they need to know about technique. Based on a “whole language approach,” THE WRITER'S WAY is a dynamic, process-centered paperback rhetoric with readings. While this book is intended to be used in a classroom, it's very much based on the concept that there is little difference between writing in school and writing in the “real world.” Offering frank advice in a supportive, encouraging tone, the authors lead readers step by step through the writing process, from pre-writing to polishing the final draft. News coverage is often described as the “first draft of history.” From the publication in 1690 of the first American newspaper, Publick Occurrences, to the latest tweet, news has been disseminated to inform its audience about what is going on in the world. But the preservation of news content has had its technological, legal, and organizational challenges. Over the centuries, as new means of finding, producing, and distributing news were developed, the methods used to ensure future generations’ access changed, and new challenges for news content preservation arose. This book covers the history of news preservation (or lack thereof), the decisions that helped ensure (or doom) its preservation, and the unique preservation issues that each new form of media brought. All but one copy of Publick Occurrences were destroyed by decree. The wood-pulp based newsprint used for later newspapers crumbled to dust. Early microfilm disintegrates to acid and decades of microfilmed newspapers have already dissolved in their storage drawers. Early radio and television newscasts were rarely captured and when they were, the technological formats for accessing the tapes are long superseded. Sounds and images stored on audio and videotapes fade and become unreadable. The early years of web publication by news organizations were lost by changes in publishing platforms and a false security that everything on the Internet lives forever. In 50 or 100 years, what will we be able to retrieve from today’s news output? How will we tell the story of this time and place? Will we have better access to news produced in 1816 than news produced in 2016? These are some of the questions Future-Proofing the News aims to answer.

This book begins with information on architectural styles that have dominated the field over the last four centuries, followed by basic design components related to the site and structure. Commercial drafting, basic materials used for construction, common construction methods and drawings typically associated with commercial construction are all covered. An important feature of this best-seller is its step-by-step instructions for the design and layout of each type of drawing associated with a complete set of architectural plans, with projects that can be completed using either CAD or manual drawing methods. File noting has been in the recent past, and still is, under heated discussion in the context of Right to Information Act, 2005. It has, thus, been drawing a lot of interest from all concerned. Basic note in a file is written by an Office Assistant/ Assistant Section Officer. A good note should properly define and analyse the problem; refer to relevant rules, regulations, policies and precedents; talk about alternative solutions; discuss implications of these various alternatives and then suggest a suitable solution and a draft reply. Noting and drafting has, therefore, always been a vital part of decision-making process in the Government. the quality of Noting and Drafting has deteriorated over the years. There is hardly any publication on the subject except for some references in the manuals of office procedures. Hence, this attempt, A book for Government Officials to Master Noting and Drafting. It is a comprehensive book which talks about various concepts, the significance, features of good and bad notings, and skilful drafts citing examples drawn from actual files. Different exercises, their solutions, and samples of some good file notings and useful drafts make this book valuable for all its readers.
