Scientific meetings on programmable devices and systems began in 1995 with the PDS'95 event organised by the Institute of Electronics, Silesian University of Technology (SUT). Many papers on the issues of programmable devices and systems were presented at numerous conferences and workshops devoted to electronics and circuit theory yet there were no workshops devoted solely to those particular topics. Combined with the belief that some specific common problems appeared in the area of PDS justified the decision to organise the PDS meeting. The PDS2001 IFAC Workshop, organised by the Institute of Electronics, SUT, Gliwice, Poland was the 5th event in the series. The aim of the meeting was to define the future trends of this field via the interaction of industry, technical research centres and academia representatives. This Proceedings volume contains 54 duly presented papers and many of them when compared to the Preprints volume version have been corrected and enriched with the discussion results. The papers are grouped according to the Workshop plenary sessions topics as follows: •Communication •Digital Signal Processing •Industrial Programmable Logic Controllers •Field Programmable Logic

The IFAC Workshop on Programmable Devices and Systems (PDS) started in the middle of the nineties in Poland. The organisers believe that in the area of programmable devices and systems there are some problems specific to them, which sufficiently justifies the decision to organise the PDS 2000 IFAC Workshop. The Workshop's main objective is to provide a forum to present the latest research results and experiences in the area of the design and application of programmable devices and systems and a forum to discuss the current status and future trends of this particular branch of the programmable devices in measurement, control, and computer science.

This book is the proceedings volume of the 10th International Conference on Field Programmable Logic and its Applications (FPL), held August 27 30, 2000 in Villach, Austria, which covered areas like reconfigurable logic (RL), reconfigurable computing (RC), and its applications, and all other aspects. Its subtitle "The Roadmap to Reconfigurable Computing" reminds us, that we are currently witnessing the runaway of a breakthrough. The annual FPL series is the eldest international conference in the world covering configware and all its aspects. It was founded 1991 at Oxford University (UK) and is 2 years older than its two most important competitors usually taking place at Monterey and Napa. FPL has been held at Oxford, Vienna, Prague, Darmstadt, London, Tallinn, and Glasgow (also see: http://www. fpl. uni kl. de/FPL/). The New Case for Reconfigurable Platforms: Converging Media. Indicated by palmtops, smart mobile phones, many other portables, and consumer electronics, media such as voice, sound, video, TV, wireless, cable, telephone, and Internet continue to converge. This creates new opportunities and even necessities for reconfigurable platform usage. The new converged media require high volume, flexible, multi purpose, multi standard, low power products adaptable to support evolving standards, emerging new standards, field upgrades, bug fixes, and, to meet the needs of a growing number of different kinds of services offered to zillions of individual subscribers preferring different media mixes.

This book covers selected topics of automated logic synthesis dedicated to FPGAs. The authors focused on two main problems: decomposition of the multioutput functions and technology mapping. Additionally, the idea of using binary decision diagrams (BDD) in these processes was presented. The book is a scientific monograph summarizing the authors’ many years of research. As a result, it contains a large number of experimental results, which makes it a valuable source for other researchers. The book has a significant didactic value. Its arrangement allows for a gradual transition from basic things (e.g., description of logic functions) to much more complex issues. This approach allows less advanced readers to better understand the described problems. In addition, the authors made sure that the issues described in the book were supported by practical examples, thanks to which the reader can independently analyze even the most complex problems described in the book.

Annotation Fifty-one papers and 21 posters from the March 2002 symposium report current research in deep submicron integrated circuit design and development. The sessions address interconnect extraction and modeling, design for process variations, metrics, power and noise management, verification, signal integrity, and low power design techniques. Some of the topics are transition aware global signaling (TAGS), the interoperability of EDA tools for sequential logic synthesis, statistical methods for the determination of process corners, power supply noise suppression via clock skew scheduling, and the relation between SAT and BDDs for equivalence checking. This book discusses control units represented by the model of a finite state machine (FSM). It contains various original methods and takes into account the peculiarities of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA) chips and a FSM model. It shows that one of the peculiarities of FPGA chips is the existence of embedded memory blocks (EMB). The book is devoted to the solution of problems of logic synthesis and reduction of hardware amount in control units. The book will be interesting and useful for researchers and PhD students in the area of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, as well as for designers of modern digital systems.
