Improve your mental health and make yourself happier with this mood-boosting, life-changing, holistic nutritional plan that includes recipes, advice, and the science behind it from an internationally bestselling author and a nutritional therapist. Eat better, feel better! There’s a reason that our stomachs are often referred to as our second brains: the gut is responsible for producing around 90 percent of a person’s serotonin, the chemical responsible for making you feel good. Since suffering from her last serious bout of depression in 2011, bestselling author and mental health advocate Rachel Kelly has developed a broad holistic approach to staying healthy and happy, and the heart of her recovery process involves a crucial shift in diet. Over the past five years, Kelly has worked with nutritionist Alice Mackintosh to identify the foods that either drag us down or lift us up. Together, they have built up a repertoire of over five-dozen recipes that target particular symptoms, from insomnia and mood swings to anxiety and exhaustion. In this bright, warm, beautifully designed cookbook with chapters ranging from Steady Energy and Beating the Blues to Hormonal Peace and Finding Comfort, they put all the theories into practice, explaining how you can incorporate these changes seamlessly into your daily life. Along with fantastic recipes and daily meal planners, each chapter features informative introductions explaining the nutritional science behind their advice. The Happiness Diet also offers cheat sheets of essential foods to incorporate into your diet, with comforting thoughts and inspirational quotes. Follow the advice in these pages, and even if it’s the only life change you make, you will begin to feel stronger and lighter with each passing week. Happy eating!

The Good Mood Diet

Dr. Kleiner, a leading nutrition authority on eating for strength, has put together a diet that has already been tested in Seattle with a Seattle Good Mood Diet weight loss group program. Bob Condor highlighted the progress of the group in the Seattle Post Intelligencer from Nov. 1, 2004 through April 2005. The author has since received thousands of requests for more information. The idea behind this book is that you can choose healthy foods that both make you feel great and, when eaten according to the plan, help you lose weight. Most diets cause chemical changes in the brain that make the dieter feel depressed. The typical plan is often too low in calories. In this diet, the participants eat feel-good foods with both ideal timing and ideal combinations. People's energy levels soar and participants feel better in days. The key is to combine the right foods-i.e. balance of protein and fats to go with carbs. The plan outlines a diet of about 40 percent carbs, 30 percent proteins, and 30 percent fats and fiber. Participants eat from a list of "feel good foods," and eliminate excessive added sugar in processed foods. Sweets are not taboo, but the authors believes in "eat it only if you love it" when it comes to sweets. For instance, if you love pumpkin pie, have a slice, but maybe skip the crust unless it's fabulous. A bit of chocolate and a glass of red wine a day is okay once you're two weeks into the diet.

Life Is Conscious is the compilation of quarterly seasonal essays written through the unique view of a Botanist. A rich and thoughtful mix of fact and metaphor can be expected throughout this unique, keen look into the possibility of creating a world where people coexist in peace, health, happiness, and respect for the planet. Readers may be pleasantly surprised to be humorously yet astutely compared to other living things: potted plants, wild growing trees, sprawling vines, the tortoise, the hare, honeybees, and other engaging comparisons. Owen’s unique blend of metaphor and fact make his recipe for a peaceful world difficult to dispute. He merrily invites people to consider their actions before they choose, to consider the ramifications of these choices, and to acknowledge that what we do affects the whole world because we are all connected. Whether a plant enthusiast, animal lover, health nut, peace activist, or just an individual who simply desires something different, Life Is Conscious has something for everyone.
