A poignant love triangle between childhood sweethearts and their closest friend, set in Stuttgart, Germany, during the rise of Hitler’s Third Reich, this tale takes the reader on an emotional roller coaster ride of pain, despair, and eventually, joy. Sweethearts, Marc and Lisbeth marry while their friend, Hans, who is a fugitive after joining Hitler’s aborted putsch in Munich, can only watch from afar as the object of his affection pledges her love to his friend. Later, the couple and their daughter move to Holland in an effort to avoid Hitler’s demoniac rule. Marc, on business in Switzerland during Germany’s conquest of Holland, learns his family has been swept up by the SS. Unable to make contact, he returns to Germany, hoping he can ransom his wife and daughter. Apprehended by the Gestapo, he is told his family died in transit. Stricken to the core, Marc seeks only death. But the Gestapo tortures him to reveal the large sum of money they know he has hidden. After much suffering, he escapes to Switzerland, where he joins the American Army and returns to Europe as an infantry officer. In the interim, Lisbeth and her daughter are enduring their own torments in a work camp where they are at the mercy of their sadistic guards. Just when things seem their worst, Hans, now a Waffen SS officer, becomes camp commandant and learns the two are prisoners. Still deeply in love with Lisbeth, Hans risks severe censure to keep the two safe and to look for information about Marc. He eventually obtains a Gestapo report stating that Marc has certainly died during his escape. Knowing that the inmates in the camp will eventually be killed, Hans must weigh his love for Lisbeth against his loyalty to his country. The struggle of the three becomes an exciting story as the wheel of chance turns full circle.

Deep inside the Organ Mountains located in New Mexico, a treasure of gold and silver has remained hidden for hundreds of years. A Spanish soldier divulged the location of this cache as he died in the arms of the local padre, who scribbled the information on a scrap of paper. This fragment of yellowed paper remained obscured, lodged between pages of a prayer book at a monastery over many decades. The elusive informationthe subject of enduring folklore, rumors, and gossipgradually became known as the Legend of the Bent Organ Pipes, a formation of vertical columns of granite in the Organ Mountains. Then, in the 1940s, this obscure paper is discovered by a German priest who is serving at the monastery. He requests that the information be inscribed on a pewter medallion and cut into five pieces to ensure secrecy. Alas, a former German Panzer Tank commander, Colonel Helmut Schmidt, alias Red Fox, and the nemesis of detectives Sam Hames and Howie Newbald, learns about the legend. Determined to be the first to find the treasure, he entices two of his former soldiers to assist him. He thinks the five separate pieces of the medallion may now be located in Indiana, but where exactly? Sheriff Neverfine, chief law officer in Gurant County, Indiana, becomes involved. He directs detectives, Sam and Howie, to investigate the legend and nab the crafty Red Fox. Who will be the first to locate the five pieces of the medallion, follow the directions, and find the treasure? You will have to read every chapter to find out.

CAROUSEL CURRICULUM Definition- carousel: a merry-go-round, a conveyer on which items are placed for later retrieval. (Education should be fun, and we learn by retrieving old information and building on it.) My curriculum is a collection of literature-based thematic units for early learners. The units are developmentally appropriate for all early learners. They are standards based and Creative Curriculum friendly. Carousel Curriculum has been used successfully with young learners including English language learners, children with special needs and diverse learning styles as well as homeschoolers. I am a teacher with 35 years of teaching experience in the areas of early childhood education and early childhood special education. Principals and co-workers always expressed an interest in my thematic units. This planted the bug for me to write down and market what I have used successfully for so many years. The curriculum was created through years of education, experience, trial and error, revisions, and updating. Each unit covers a span of 4-6 weeks. Each unit includes an introduction, weekly outlines, daily plans, poems and songs, a book list, additional activities listed by domain, and related ideas for centers. Each unit can be used independently or be used as part of the collection of units to create an interwoven curriculum: Animals And Their Environments. The total collection includes: Farm Animals, Forest Animals in Winter, Polar Animals, Jungle Animals, Pond Animals, and Ocean Animals. Additional units available are Farm Crops, A Safari, The Zoo, and The Circus. I hope the units will be a great resource for you and your class. Enjoy!!!

John Fox Jr. published this great romantic novel of the Cumberland Mountains of Kentucky and Virginia in 1908, and the book quickly became one of America's favorites. It has all the elements of a good romance -- a superior but natural heroine, a hero who is an agent of progress and enlightenment, a group of supposedly benighted mountaineers to be drawn into the flow of mainstream American culture, a generous dose of social and class struggle, and a setting among the misty coves and cliffs of the blue Cumberlands. Reprinted with a foreword by John Ed Pearce, The Trail of the Lonesome Pine has all the excitement and poignance that caught and held readers' interest when the book first appeared.
