This collection, Tales of Mystery and Imagination encompasses twenty-nine of Poe’s finest stories – comprising all the terrifying and bewildering narratives that typify his work. It includes: ‘Morella’, ‘Ligeia’, ‘The Murders in Rue Morgue’, ‘The Masque of Red Death’, ‘The Black Cat’ and many others. Edgar Allan Poe (1809 – 1849) was an American poet, writer and literary critic who belonged to the Romantic Movement. He contributed greatly to the genres of horror and science fiction, and his thrilling tales earned him considerable fame during his lifetime, and after his death. Whilst his first work, ‘Tamerlane and Other Poems’ was published in 1827 in relative obscurity, it was the publication of ‘The Raven and Other Poems’ in 1845, that brought him instant success. The stories in Tales of Mystery and Imagination are accompanied by the dazzling illustrations of a master of the trade; Harry Clarke (1889 – 1931). Clarke was an Irish stained-glass artist and book illustrator – and a leading figure in the Irish Arts and Crafts Movement. His drawings were inspired by the Art Nouveax style so typical of this period – and his sinuous lines combined with delicate colouring earned him a reputation as a preeminent illustrator of the ‘Golden Age.’ Presented alongside the text, his illustrations further refine and elucidate Poe’s captivating narratives. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children’s stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.

This collection of Poe's finest stories comprises all the terrifying and bewildering tales that typify his work. All of Poe's Auguste Dupin stories appear alongside the Gothic horror The Pit and the Pendulum, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Premature Burial, and what is perhaps his most enduring work The Fall of the House of Usher. Never was there an illustrator whose work was more perfectly suited to the work of Poe - Rackham's ethereal blend of the gruesome with the sublime seem destined to cloth Poe's chilling tales. Many of the earliest children's books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Pook Press are working to republish these classic works in affordable, high quality, colour editions, using the original text and artwork so these works can delight another generation of children. About the Author: Edgar Alan Poe (1809-1849) was an American poet, writer and literary critic who belonged to the Romantic Movement. He contributed greatly to the genres of horror and science fiction and his psychologically thrilling tales earned him considerable fame during his lifetime and after his death. Perhaps his most enduring works are his tales of mystery and the macabre. Whilst his first work, Tamerlane and Other Poems was published in 1827 in relative obscurity, it was the publication of The Raven and Other Poems in 1845 that brought him instant success. About the Illustrator: Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) was one of the premier illustrators of the early 20th Century. He illustrated many books, the first of which was published in 1893. His humour, romance and soul made him the leading illustrator of the early twentieth century and his work is to be found in versions of almost every classic from Hansel and Gretel to The Tempest, from The Pied Piper to Peer Gynt. Characteristic of his work are gloomy forests of sinuous trees, nubile fairy maidens, and unsightly ogres and trolls. Throughout his career, he developed a very individual style that was to influence a whole generation of children, artists and other illustrators. His haunting humour and dreamlike romance add to the enchantment and fantasy of children's literature.

Imagination: Cross-Cultural Philosophical Analyses is a rare intercultural inquiry into the conceptions and functions of the imagination in contemporary philosophy. Divided into East Asian, comparative, and post-comparative approaches, it brings together a leading team of philosophers to explore the concepts of the illusory and illusions, the development of fantastic narratives and metaphors, and the use of images and allegories across a broad range of traditions. Chapters discuss how imagination has been interpreted by thinkers such as Zhuangzi, Plato, Confucius, Heidegger, and Nietzsche. By drawing on sources including Buddhist aesthetics, Daoism, and analytic philosophy of mind, this cross-cultural collection shows how the imagination can be an indispensable tool for the comparative philosopher, opening up new possibilities for intercultural dialogue and critical engagement.

"Looks freshly at facts that have remained marginal to most critics' sense of the literature--the sheer mechanism of artistic and literary reproductions. These essays make an unusual, various, and interesting collection, with appeal to a great many constituencies."--George Levine, author of Darwin and the Novelists "This is an exciting collection linked by a series of contemporary critical assumptions and Victorian concerns. . . . For all their reconsideration of theory, the essays are written in a lively, jargon-free style that should give them popular as well as scholarly appeal."--Carole Silver, coeditor of Socialism and the Literary Artistry of William Morris
