This book presents a detailed analysis of spectral imaging, describing how it can be used for the purposes of material identification, object recognition and scene understanding. The opportunities and challenges of combining spatial and spectral information are explored in depth, as are a wide range of applications. Features: discusses spectral image acquisition by hyperspectral cameras, and the process of spectral image formation; examines models of surface reflectance, the recovery of photometric invariants, and the estimation of the illuminant power spectrum from spectral imagery; describes spectrum representations for the interpolation of reflectance and radiance values, and the classification of spectra; reviews the use of imaging spectroscopy for material identification; explores the recovery of reflection geometry from image reflectance; investigates spectro-polarimetric imagery, and the recovery of object shape and material properties using polarimetric images captured from a single view.

Understanding Surveillance Technologies demystifies spy devices and describes how technology is used to observe and record intimate details of people’s lives—often without their knowledge or consent. From historical origins to current applications, it explains how satellites, pinhole cameras, cell phone and credit card logs, DNA kits, tiny microphones (“bugs”), chemical sniffers, and implanted RF/ID chips have enabled us to create a two-edged sword—devices that promise security while, at the same time, eroding our privacy. Understanding Surveillance Technologies is profusely illustrated with extensive references and indexes, laying the groundwork for more specialized texts on specific technologies. It covers each of the major sensing devices and explains how they are used in civilian, criminal justice, scientific, national security, and military applications. It also includes recent changes in legislation and the organization of the intelligence community, and discusses how equal access to high-tech sensing devices and encryption schemes has changed society. Understanding Surveillance Technologies is modular, so the chapters can be read in any order, and is written in an accessible, somewhat narrative style, to suit the needs of journalists/newscasters, privacy organizations, educators, civic planners, and technology centers. It is appropriate as an adjunct reference for criminal justice/law enforcement/military, and forensic trainees, and as a textbook for courses in Surveillance Studies, Sociology, Communications, and Political Science. Now in its second edition, with 1,000 pages and more than 700 diagrams, it is still the only text that comprehensively conveys the breadth of the field.

Summitville is a mine site located at 11,500 feet elevation in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, USA. Mined intermittently for gold & cooper from 1870, the mine was abandoned due to bankruptcy in 1992. Remaining was a 10 million ton heap leach pad fully loaded with cyanide, 15 million tons of sulfide-rich waste rock, a draining mine adit & 550 acres of disturbed earth. Releases of acidic, metal-laden drainage prior to the bankruptcy are blamed for damage to a trout fishery downstream. Today the mine is a Superfund site being managed by the US Environmental Protection Agency. THE PROCEEDINGS range in content from geochemistry to agriculture. Its diverse studies include water chemistry, metal uptake by soils, plants, livestock & wetlands, airborne imaging spectroscopy, ore deposit geology, sediment-water metal flux, mine engineering, groundwater hydrology, water treatment technologies including biotreatment & legal assessments of the Superfund process. The volume should be useful to scientists & engineers in earth, environmental & mining sciences & to attorneys & public policy analysts. The studies, all original, were conducted mainly by the US Geological Survey, US Environmental Protection Agency & Colorado State University. This book would serve well as an environmental science text or case study for an upper level undergraduate or graduate level course.
