According to a 1999 Surgeon General's report, "Anxiety disorders are the most common, or frequently occurring, mental disorders." Too often overworked doctors prescribe drugs to manage the condition for a short-term cure and send the patient on his way quickly. Psychologists Bob Montgomery and Laurel Morris strongly disagree with treating anxiety disorders with drugs. Their timely book provides a step-by-step plan to help anxious people learn to cope without resorting to medication, even for severe manifestations of anxiety such as obsessive-compulsive disorders and panic attacks. In easy-to-understand terms, Montgomery and Morris define anxiety, describe the different forms it takes, and show how to manage anxiety in everyday life. They discuss general anxiety, agoraphobia, phobias in general, social phobias, and social anxiety, among other types.Living with Anxiety discusses how and why to stop taking anxiety drugs and when drugs can help; it also recommends when to seek out a psychologist. It offers readers practical exercises and specific strategies for dealing with feelings, thoughts, and physical symptoms associated with anxiety attacks, and methods for strengthening social, sexual, and interpersonal skills that can be the source of anxiety.

She begins with a description of basic physiological information, explaining concepts such as breathing and overbreathing. In Part Two she dives into the practice of mindfulness. And in Part Three she zeroes in on applying this mind-body approach to an array of common problems. Khazan’s approach outlines simple solutions for readers who want to improve the way they respond to challenges. She guides them through increasing their resilience and emotional flexibility while empowering them to take back control of their overall health.

Everyone aspires to live a life that is fulfilling. This is through building meaningful relationships and enjoying the benefits that the environment around them offers. This requires someone who has mastered the art of socializing and that has various skills which people have to acquire. Some of the socializing skills are natural and inherent in our nature as humans. Others, however, have to be learned and acquired through practice. Some people are unable to draw on their social skills and interact well with other people within their environs. This book looks at the way people have to interact with others by practicing various social skills. These skills are sometimes lacking in certain people while other people have certain limitations in their personalities that render them unable to interact. Social skills entail learning how to start and sustain conversations. There are people that we often meet and since we do not know how to create conversations, the moments we encounter them are cold and sometimes awkward. This book addresses some of the awkward moments in the process of socializing and interactions. Reading the book, you realize why the interaction has awkward moments and how our lack of certain attributes to facilitate interaction contributes to these moments. In the book, steps are highlighted and well elaborated on how to ensure that we are able to trigger our social skills in interacting with others. Those who have been having difficulty with keeping communications going for long will benefit from this book as they will realize being sociable and enjoying being in social situations does not require you to have any special gifts. In the book, there is a chapter dedicated to highlighting the use of body language. This is because someone usually sends signals before they can even talk to us verbally. Inability to read people's signals through their body language can make us be irrelevant when we approach people. The book also focuses on how to make friends. This s particularly for those who have problems with initiating friendship. This book takes a dig into how people can interact in a way that can cultivate mutual friendship. The steps and skills that have to be exercised to this end are well elaborated to show you that making friends does not require someone who is talented at it. Everyone can make friendships if they follow the steps and start to exercise the skills discussed in this book. The issue of social anxiety and shyness is also addressed. This is for those who have strong fear for situations that require them to speak before people or interact with others. Steps to overcome the fear and develop courage and esteem are highlighted to make it possible for anyone to overcome the limitation. The way to apply these skills to dating circumstances as well has been given out. This is as a way to help people be able to develop relationships and learn how to build intimacy. Skills of keeping a relationship going are described in a clear way in this book. If you are seeking to improve your social skills, you have to read this book. It evokes self-reflection, creates a need for action and opens the gateways of possibility in social interactions. Fears in young children are a part of normal development, as is evidenced by numerous studies that demonstrate that approximately 90% of American children have at least one fearful reaction between the ages of 2 and 14. Anxiety disorders are among the second most common psychiatric disorders among children and adolescents, affecting approximately 10% of all youngsters under the age of 18. Childhood Anxiety Disorders presents information on childhood fears, anxiety and anxiety disorders for mental health professionals. Although firmly rooted in the current scientific research, theory, and discussion, the book is written in a style that is free from technical jargon, making it highly readable. Using the latest research data, this book examines childhood anxiety disorders, including their etiology, psychopathology, and treatment (both pharmacological and psychological). Chapters are devoted to each of the anxiety disorders listed in the DSM-IV-TR Manual, and other chapters cover the fears associated with medical procedures, chronic medical illnesses, and somatic conditions that may develop or are maintained by stress and anxiety, as these are commonly occurring conditions in children and adolescents.

For many years, anxiety and phobie disorders ofchildhoodand adolescence were ignored by clinicians and researchers alike. They were viewed as largely benign, as problems that were relatively mild, age-specific, and transitory. With time, it was thought, they would simply disappear or "go away"-that the child or adolescent would magically "outgrow" them with development and that they would not adversely affect the growing child or adolescent. As a result ofsuch thinking, it was concluded that these "internalizing" problems were not worthy or deserving of our concerted and careful attention-that other problems of childhood and adolescence and, in particular, "externalizing" problems such as conduct disturbance, oppositional defiance, and attention-deficit problems de manded our professional energies and resources. These assumptions and asser tions have been challenged vigorously in recent years. Scholarly books (King, Hamilton, & Ollendick, 1988; Morris & Kratochwill, 1983) have documented the considerable distress and misery associated with these disorders, while reviews ofthe literature have demonstrated that these disorders are anything but transitory; for a significant number of youth these problems persist into late adolescence and adulthood (Ollendick & King, 1994). Clearly, such findings signal the need for treatment programs that "work"--programs that are effective in the short term and efficacious over the long haul, producing effects that are durable and generalizable, as weil as effects that enhance the life functioning of children and adolescents and the families that evince such problems.
