German

Thousands of years ago, seafront clans in Denmark began speaking the earliest form of Germanic language--the first of six "signal events" that Ruth Sanders highlights in this marvelous history of the German language. Blending linguistic, anthropological, and historical research, Sanders presents a brilliant biography of the language as it evolved across the millennia. She sheds light on the influence of such events as the bloody three-day Battle of Kalkriese, which permanently halted the incursion of both the Romans and the Latin language into northern Europe, and the publication of Martin Luther's German Bible translation, a "People's" Bible which in effect forged from a dozen spoken dialects a single German language. The narrative ranges through the turbulent Middle Ages, the spread of the printing press, the formation of the nineteenth-century German Empire which united the German-speaking territories north of the Alps, and Germany's twentieth-century military and cultural horrors. The book also covers topics such as the Gothic language (now extinct), the vast expansion of Germanic tribes during the Roman era, the role of the Vikings in spreading the Norse language, the branching off of Yiddish, the lasting impact of the Thirty Years War on the German psyche, the revolution of 1848, and much more. Ranging from prehistoric times to modern, post-war Germany, this engaging volume offers a fascinating account of the evolution of a major European language as well as a unique look at the history of the German people. It will appeal to everyone interested in German language, culture, or history.

The Sacred Bee In Ancient Times And Folklore

Hilda Ransome's well-documented and copiously illustrated study of bees points out that no creature has provided man with so much wholesome food; nor has any inspired so many beliefs and superstitions. Illustrations depict bees, hives, and beekeepers as they appear in paintings and sculpture, on coins, jewelry, and Mayan glyphs; and carved into African tree trunks. Chapters cover the folklore of bees and bee culture — from Egyptian, Babylonian, and other ancient sources to practices in modern Europe. The use of honey in religious rites, as well as customs and superstitions in France and Central Europe, folk stories from Finland, and the bee in America are also described.

In this beautiful new collection by one of New Zealand’s top poets deft word play, allusion and quotation go along with liquid sounds, intense images and stirring rhythms. There are moving elegies and haunting love poems and many echoes of other poets, from Lorca to Robert Duncan to Alan Brunton to pop songs. There are many signs too of a poet moving into an international context. Leggott has been a guest poet at a number of overseas poetry festivals in recent years and a sense of wider world pervades the latter part of "Milk and Honey". Each of Leggott’s collections is a new step forward and while she challenges the reader she exhibits ever greater mastery of the form, a remarkable and quite distinctive voice. Associate Professor Michele Leggott has published four previous collections of poems, one of which, Dia (AUP, 1994), won the New Zealand Book Award for Poetry. She has written a respected scholarly study of the American poet Louis Zukofsky and recently published a scholarly edition of the poetry of Robin Hyde, Young Knowledge (AUP, 2003). From 1980 to 1985 she was a Canadian Commonwealth Scholar at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, where she completed her PhD. She has been a guest lecturer with poet Robert Creeley in graduate Poetics Program, State University of New York at Buffalo. She now teaches English at the University of Auckland and is the founding Director of the New Zealand Electronic Poetry Centre (www.nzepc.auckland.ac.nz). She will be revisiting Vancouver in April/May 2005.
