This book systematically introduces the bionic nature of force sensing and control, the biomechanical principle on mechanism of force generation and control of skeletal muscle, and related applications in robotic exoskeleton. The book focuses on three main aspects: muscle force generation principle and biomechanical model, exoskeleton robot technology based on skeletal muscle biomechanical model, and SMA-based bionic skeletal muscle technology. This comprehensive and in-depth book presents the author's research experience and achievements of many years to readers in an effort to promote academic exchanges in this field. About the Author Yuehong Yin received his B.E. , M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Nanjing, in 1990, 1995 and 1997, respectively, all in mechanical engineering. From December 1997 to December 1999, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow with Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China, where he became an Associate Professor in July 1999. Since December 1999, he has been with the Robotics Institute, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China, where he became a Professor and a Tenure Professor in December 2005 and January 2016, respectively. His research interests include robotics, force control, exoskeleton robot, molecular motor, artificial limb, robotic assembly, reconfigurable assembly system, and augmented reality. Dr. Yin is a fellow of the International Academy of Production Engineering (CIRP).

"This ... is the joint work of Otto Arco and myself. The division of labor is somewhat unequal. Arco does all the work of posing and supplies all the details of instruction. All that I do is to get the material together, to expand his all-too-brief notes, to comment on his ideas and attend to the publication. Personally I have been familiar with the subject of muscle-control since thirty years ago, when I saw it demonstrated by Checkley, by Sandow and by the dozens of performers who imitated his posing act. Sandow used muscle-control as a part of his posing; that is, many of his poses depended for their effectiveness on his ability to control, and thus display, his muscles. Those who reproduced his act, reproduced his poses, as well as they could; but there was no decided advance in the art of muscle- control until Arco came along. He not only was able to duplicate all the control feats of his predecessor, but by reason of his study and knowledge, could and did, originate a lot of new feats; getting his own muscles under the control of his will to a degree that no one else has been able to even approximate—much less equal." -Alan CalvertThis is a restored edition of Arco and Calvert's 1925 classic. The text remains exactly as written. This book has many pages with old photographs and illustrations. This is a must have book for your physical culture library. First published in 1997. The respiratory muscles are multifunctional muscles involved in other behaviors besides breathing -- from the protection of the upper airway to cognitive functions such as speech or singing. Neural Control of the Respiratory Muscles presents an overall consideration of how these muscles are regulated by the central nervous system in normal as well as in pathological situations. A group of 40 internationally recognized scientists and clinicians have collaborated to discuss current findings in the field and to identify areas of future development such as o The anatomical and functional organization of the respiratory muscles and the mechanics of the chest wall o Respiratory muscle control by the central nervous system during normal breathing and during disease states o Respiration during sleep, exercise, and locomotion o Respiratory muscle contribution to non-respiratory behaviors; interaction of the central pattern generator for respiration with other central pattern generators o Multifunctional nature of respiratory muscles and respiratory neurons of the central nervous system Although other texts exist that examine the control of breathing and other specialized topics considered in this volume, Neural Control of the Respiratory Muscles is the first major single-volume publication that takes a broad view of muscle control during non-respiratory behaviors and the coordination of respiration with non-respiratory behaviors.

This authoritative study synthesizes physiology, neuroanatomy, kinesiology, and psychology in a thorough introduction to motor control. Readers will learn how the nervous system processes information, how the brain learns from previous experience and self-adjusts, and how behavioral intent is fitted into the circumstances of the moment. Throughout the book, the author considers questions of adaption, motor learning, and guidance by the limbic system. Superbly illustrated and highlighted by many clinical examples, this volume is a clear, up-to-date account of motor control for students and professionals in the neurosciences, physical and occupational therapy, rehabilitation medicine, and kinesiology.
