Stanford mathematician and NPR Math Guy Keith Devlin explains why, fun aside, video games are the ideal medium to teach middle-school math. Aimed primarily at teachers and education researchers, but also of interest to game developers who want to produce videogames for mathematics education, Mathematics Education for a New Era: Video Games as a Medium for Learning describes exactly what is involved in designing and producing successful math educational videogames that foster the innovative mathematical thinking skills necessary for success in a global economy. A History of the 'New Mathematics' Movement and its Relationship with Current Mathematical Reform provides a history of the 'new mathematics' movement of the 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s in the United States and relates it to current mathematics curricular reform. The history of the 'new math' education movement is explained in terms of the general curriculum in schools, the mathematics curriculum, the teaching standards, and the pedagogical techniques used. A complete analysis of the history of the 'new math' movement was accomplished by separately investigating major and minor 'new math' projects. In conjunction, the aftermath of the 'new math' movement is explained providing suggestions as to why this movement is often seen as having failed. A short history of reform from the 1970s to the present is provided. Finally, the book compares the 'new mathematics' movement with the current mathematics reform movement led by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

As dissatisfaction with the current status of school mathematics grows worldwide, educators and professionals alike are calling for reforms and instructional changes. Yet, significant changes can only be achieved if each educator of school mathematics personally rethinks various aspects of mathematics instruction, and identifies concrete ways in which their current practice could be modified. Before such visions can be meaningfully implemented in classrooms, it is important that mathematics teachers and educators examine critically both the assumptions and implications of the vision for school mathematics that the reports propose. This book is intended to support educators in such a challenging enterprise by focusing attention on errors and their use in mathematics instruction. Throughout the book, an approach to errors as opportunities for learning and inquiry will be developed and employed both as a means to create the kinds of instructional experiences advocated for school mathematics reform, and as a heuristic to invite reflections about school mathematics as well as mathematics as a discipline. REVIEWS: ...Raffaella Borasi's newest book offers important contributions to the current debate on school mathematics reform. - Journal for Research in Mathematics Education There are some great bits of philosophy in this book... - Mathematics Teaching

All papers have been peer-reviewed. The main goal of this series of conferences is to bring together experts and young talented scientists from Bulgaria and abroad to discuss modern trends and to ensure exchange of views in various applications of mathematics in engineering, physics, economics, biology, etc. Keeping the main topics of the previous AMEE conferences as well as the big success of AMEE'07, this year’s 34th issue was again subject to the motto "Nonlinear phenomena - mathematical theory and environmental reality." The organizing Committee encouraged the participation of senior and postgraduate students and organized a separate youth session. The invited speakers organized two special sessions. Within the 34th Conference AMEE’08 a "Round Table - Presentations and Discussion - on Mathematics Education in Bachelor Degree Programs and in Master Degree Programs," Conference Tutorial "Introduction to Software Agents and Their Applications," and Workshop on Grid and Scientific Engineering Application (GRID&SEA) took place. The publishing, promotion and distribution the proceedings among the mathematical and related societies taking an interest in its topics is an integral part of the Conference.

There is no question that native cultures in the New World exhibit many forms of mathematical development. This Native American mathematics can best be described by considering the nature of the concepts found in a variety of individual New World cultures. Unlike modern mathematics in which numbers and concepts are expressed in a universal mathematical notation, the numbers and concepts found in native cultures occur and are expressed in many distinctive ways. Native American Mathematics, edited by Michael P. Closs, is the first book to focus on mathematical development indigenous to the New World. Spanning time from the prehistoric to the present, the thirteen essays in this volume attest to the variety of mathematical development present in the Americas. The data are drawn from cultures as diverse as the Ojibway, the Inuit (Eskimo), and the Nootka in the north; the Chumash of Southern California; the Aztec and the Maya in Mesoamerica; and the Inca and Jibaro of South America. Among the strengths of this collection are this diversity and the multidisciplinary approaches employed to extract different kinds of information. The distinguished contributors include mathematicians, linguists, psychologists, anthropologists, and archaeologists.
