"On the Edge of Reason is one of the great European novels of the first half of the twentieth century – and Krleza's themes, his seriousness, his protest against the normality of delusion and cruelty, could hardly be more relevant to the century's end." —Susan Sontag During his long and distinguished career, the Croatian writer Miroslav Krleza (1893-1981) battled against many forms of tyranny. In On the Edge of Reason, his protagonist is a middle-aged lawyer whose life and career have been eminently respectable and respected. One evening, at a party attended by the local elite, he inadvertently blurts out an honest thought. From this moment, all hell breaks loose.... On the Edge of Reason reveals the fundamental chasm between conformity and individuality. As folly piles on folly, hypocrisy on hypocrisy, reason itself begins to give way, and the edge between reality and unreality disappears.

An urgent defense of reason, the essential method for resolving--or even discussing--divisive issues Reason, long held as the highest human achievement, is under siege. According to Aristotle, the capacity for reason sets us apart from other animals, yet today it has ceased to be a universally admired faculty. Rationality and reason have become political, disputed concepts, subject to easy dismissal. Julian Baggini argues eloquently that we must recover our reason and reassess its proper place, neither too highly exalted nor completely maligned. Rationality does not require a sterile, scientistic worldview, it simply involves the application of critical thinking wherever thinking is needed. Addressing such major areas of debate as religion, science, politics, psychology, and economics, the author calls for commitment to the notion of a "community of reason," where disagreements are settled by debate and discussion, not brute force or political power. Baggini's insightful book celebrates the power of reason, our best hope--indeed our only hope--for dealing with the intractable quagmires of our time.

With an introduction by journalist Hadley Freeman 9st 2, cigarettes smoked in front of Mark 0 (v.g.), cigarettes smoked in secret 7, cigarettes not smoked 47 (v.g.). Bridget’s second diary ushers in a reformed woman. She is no longer a smoker (well, not much), the wilderness years are over, and she is at last united with man-of-her-dreams Mark Darcy. But things aren’t perfect: there’s an eight-foot hole in the wall of her flat, she’s increasingly worried about a certain boyfriend-stealing beauty, and her friends’ mad advice is getting her nowhere – something has to change. And so Bridget decides to embark on a spiritual epiphany to the palm- and magic-mushroom-kissed shores of Thailand. Surely it will be the perfect place to set her life on course once and for all . . . Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason is Bridget at her best: funny, wise, and, as ever, a little bit sloshed. A number-one bestseller by Helen Fielding, it is, alongside Bridget Jones’s Diary, a modern classic and one of the funniest books you’ll ever read.

These experiments and others are heroic in every sense, and Ananthaswamy captures their excitement"and the personalities of the scientists behind them"with enthusiasm and insight'"Publishers Weekly In this deeply original book, science writer Anil Ananthaswamy sets out to explore the world's most audacious physics experiments: the cutting-edge telescopes and detectors that promise to answer the biggest questions in modern cosmology. Why is the universe expanding at an ever faster rate? What is the nature of the -dark matter' that makes up almost a quarter of the universe? Why does the universe appear fine-tuned for life? Are there other universes besides our own? In his quest, Ananthaswamy travels to some of the most extreme, remote"and often dangerous"sites on our planet. He takes us to Mount Paranal in the Chilean Andes, where four massive domes of the Very Large Telescope open to the sky each night -like dragons waking up' and collect brilliant images of galaxies billions of light-years away. To the starkly gorgeous Hanle Valley in Ladakh where the relatively nascent Indian Astronomical Observatory uses robotic telescopes to study the seismology of distant stars. And to the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, where engineers are drilling 1.5 miles into the clearest ice on the globe to build the world's largest neutrino detector, which could finally help reconcile quantum physics with Einstein's theory of general relativity. The stories he weaves of the people who work at these and other dramatic research sites"from Lake Baikal in Siberia to the depths of an abandoned iron mine in Minnesota to the subterranean lair of the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva"reveal science to be a human process and make for a compelling new portrait of the universe and our quest to understand it. Atmospheric, engaging and illuminating, The Edge of Reason lucidly unravels essential conundrums and brings cosmology back down to earth in the most vivid terms.

The book mostly deals with the poignancy of dreams and how transient they are. The poems also deal with the way the world appears to the eyes of the author describing the emotions and states of mind that he thinks in. In many ways this collection of poetry is more like a lyrical commentary of the author's take on what it takes to live in today's modern world of fast pace and fleeting dreams.

I started writing the day my first grandchild was born. When I looked into his eyes I saw the generations off my family. It was then I realised that the reason my father could not help me to understand who or what I was. Quite simply I had no idea any more than my father before. That is what motivated me to write happiness is a recipe hard to find. It was in constructing this rime I discovered this hidden talent for stretching information with poetry. This book is an illustration of my story to reason for me and those I love what is life worthy, writing and sharing these and other poems have brought many rewards to my life we have great potential.

Should scientists challenge religious beliefs? Is religion inevitable in human society? Is religion harmful to society? Can science itself inspire spiritual wonder? Confrontation between science and religion has defined much public debate about religion in recent years, most lately in bestsellers portraying a clash between scientists and religious believers, such as Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion and Sam Harris's The End of Faith or Letter to a Christian Nation. But what does this 'us versus them' divide mean for society? This collection of essays gives voice to social scientists, natural scientists and theologians whose experience holds direct relevance on these major issues, and clarifies the position of science in the modern debate. Includes contributions by Mary Midgley (University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK), Denis Alexander (Cambridge University, UK), Richard Roberts (Lancaster University, UK), Bob Layton (Durham University, UK), Simon Coleman (Sussex University, UK), Michael Shermer (Executive Director of the Sceptics Society and monthly columnist for Scientific American), Lewis Wolpert (University College London, UK), Andrew Newberg (University of Pennsylvania), Timothy Taylor (University of Bradford, UK), Steven Mithen (University of Reading, UK), David Sloan Wilson (Binghamton University), Herbert Maschner (Idaho State University), Ian Reader (University of Manchester, UK), Hiroko Kawanami (Lancaster University, UK), Andrian Kreye (Süddeutsche Zeitung), John Hedley Brooke (Oxford University, UK), Gordy Slack (Author of The Battle Over The Meaning Of Everything), Seth Shostak (Seti Institute), William Calvin (University Of Washington), and David Wilkinson (Durham University, UK).

The original edition of Planks of Reason was the first academic critical anthology on horror. In retrospect, it appeared as a kind of homage to the "golden age" of the American horror film, as this genre played an increasing role in film culture and American life. This revised edition retains the spirit of the original, but also offers new takes on rediscovered classics and recent developments in the genre.

Dynamics Of The Party System

Since the original edition of Dynamics of the Party System was published in 1973, American politics have continued on a tumultuous course. In the vacuum left by the decline of the Democratic and Republican parties, single-interest groups have risen and flourished. Protest movements on the left and the New Right at the opposite pole have challenged and divided the major parties, and the Reagan Revolution--in reversing a fifty-year trend toward governmental expansion--may turn out to have revolutionized the party system too. In this edition, as in the first, current political trends and events are placed in a historical and theoretical context. Focusing upon three major realignments of the past--those of the 1850s, the 1890s, and the 1930s--Sundquist traces the processes by which basic transformations of the country's two-party system occur. From the historical case studies, he fashions a theory as to the why and how of party realignment, then applies it to current and recent developments, through the first two years of the Reagan presidency and the midterm election of 1982. The theoretical sections of the first edition are refined in this one, the historical sections are revised to take account of recent scholarship, and the chapters dealing with the postwar period are almost wholly rewritten. The conclusion of the original work is, in general, confirmed: the existing party system is likely to be strengthened as public attention is again riveted on domestic economic issues, and the headlong trend of recent decades toward political independence and party disintegration reversed, at least for a time.

Will Cari survive, and will she find justice for her fianc? Perhaps, after meeting the young man who found her lying on the side of the road or the detective who didnt believe her story. As Cari travels down this perilous road and faces more danger than she ever anticipated, is it possible for her to find true happiness?
