Completed in 1997, the Kunsthaus Bregenz is clad in glass panels. During the day, it is a semi-transparent glass structure, while at night it becomes a thirty-meter-high glowing cube, a statement in light. The interior of the building - a stack of three rooms offering an exhibition space of 1,800 square meters, with a highly sophisticated air-conditioning system that both heats and cools - is constructed in smooth concrete, terrazzo, matt glass, and indirect natural light. This reprint of the monograph from the Werkdokumente series presents the architecture of Zumthor's museum with texts by Friedrich Achleitner and the architect himself, as well as with floor plans and photographs by Hélène Binet.

Atmosphere is an essential concept for Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. In his text Atmospheres (1996), Zumthor identified a series of themes that play a role in his work in achieving architectonic atmosphere. OASE exchanges ideas with Zumthor about the current relevance of this text, and about the practice of bringing together these elements in the design and construction process. Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa relates atmosphere in architecture to examples and theories from other disciplines like psychology and the visual arts. Zumthor and Pallasmaa also introduce the work of contemporary architects who in their view succeed in truly creating atmosphere through construction.

This volume presents the most recent work of an architect who has "at last achieved cult status" (Stuttgarter Zeitung) with his exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art -- and whose projects have garnered international attention and awards. During daytime Zumthor's new Kunsthaus in Bregenz gives the impression of a semi-transparent glass body, and at night it becomes a highly visible cube -- a statement in light. The interior of the building is constructed in smooth concrete, terrazo, matt glass and indirect, virtually natural light. The new Kunsthaus bears witness to Zumthor's consistently intense dialogue with the sites for which he designs. Situated on the shores of Lake Constance, the main building, with its side structure and services, creates a high quality focus in the town.

Peter Zumthor, 2009 Pritzker laureate, is one of the best known architects of the present day. Widely admired for his precision and thoroughness, he creates buildings that are responsive to their location and function, and that are remarkable both for their materials and the atmospheric quality of the spaces they enclose. This five-volume overview of his work to date presents forty-three buildings and projects, including some that have never been published before. On 856 pages with over 750 photographs, plans, sketches, drawings and watercolors, and with texts written by Peter Zumthor himself specially for this monograph, it documents a wide range of projects from several world-famous buildings to some that never left the drawing board. With photographs by Hélène Binet, Hans Danuser, Ralph Feiner, Thomas Flechtner, Walter Mair, Joël Tettamanti, and others.
