Separated from her ship, Major Trace Thakur is stranded on the reeh-occupied world of Rando. The native corbi have suffered beneath reeh tyranny for 800 years, and many have given up hope. But Trace needs the data stored in the reeh's genetic technology and command center - the Rando Splicer - if she's to learn how to save humanity from impending disaster, and is planning an assault against overwhelming odds. She'll need help from the UFS Phoenix, though, which is caught in a ritual medieval battle to change the croma leadership that sees her crew embarking on a perilous journey across a warring desert continent. Should they fail, humanity could be just one of many species to die.

MRNA processing is a key step in gene expression that effects all the proteins within the cell. In mRNA Processing and Metabolism: Methods and Protocols, world-renowned researchers bring together the latest techniques spanning the breadth of mRNA processing and metabolism. Drawing on recent advances in microscopy, whole genome sequencing, microarrays, mass spectrometry, fluorescent detection methodologies, and RNA interference, the authors offer readily reproducible methods for the cotranscriptional processing events that occur while the mRNA is engaged with elongating RNA polymerase II, with splicing and its biochemical analysis and with alternative splicing. Additional methods cover mRNA export, the recovery and analysis of mRNP complexes, cytoplasmic translation, mRNA degradation in vivo and in vitro, and the controversial concept of nuclear translation. A variety of model organisms are used, including yeast, Drosophila, Xenopus, mice, plants, and cultured mammalian cells. Each proven protocol is described in step-by-step detail and contains an introduction outlining the principle behind the technique, lists of equipment and reagents, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Timely and authoritative, mRNA Processing and Metabolism: Methods and Protocols provides a powerful collection of novel techniques that are not only effective, but also immediately applicable to current problems in many areas of biological research.

This volume is the result of a meeting bringing together many of the leading researchers in the US, Europe, and Asia, to report on advances that have been made in the chemistry, biology, and clinical application of thymosins in health and disease. The thymosins are a family of biologically active peptides with hormone-like properties that were first isolated in 1966. Since that time, significant progress has been made in our understanding of the role of these molecules in immunity and the nature of the physiological processes they regulate. Several of these small peptides, such as thymosin alpha 1 and thymosin beta 4, have been synthesized and shown to have important clinical applications. The physiological processes that these peptides affect include stimulation or suppression of immune responses, regulation of actin dynamics and cell motility, neuroplasticity, repair and remodeling of vessels of the heart and other injured tissues, angiogenesis, and stem cell differentiation. Several of these molecules have also been shown to be useful as molecular markers and as potential diagnostics in areas ranging from cancer and infectious diseases to autoimmune diseases and aging. In addition to reports on advances in basic research, the meeting will also highlight recent translational studies and detail how several of these molecules may play a role in the treatment of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and infectious diseases such as hepatitis.
