She entered service two months before the start of World War I, was scrapped six years after World War II ended, and was the longest lasting of all four funnelled liners. For two wars, she spent much time transporting troops but for the rest of her career she traveled the North Atlantic as one of the most famous liners afloat. Holding many records, Aquitania was built for the Cunard Line, not for speed but for luxury, at which she excelled, being called the Ship Magnificent from her entry into service. Mark Chirnside writes with a passion about this most beautiful of ships, a ship that was the epitome of the four-funnelled liner.

Excerpt: RMS Aquitania was a Cunard Line ocean liner designed by Leonard Peskett and built by John Brown & Company in Clydebank, Scotland. She was launched on 21 April 1913 and sailed on her maiden voyage to New York on 30 May 1914. Aquitania was the third in Cunard Line's "grand trio" of express liners, preceded by the RMS Mauretania and RMS Lusitania, and was the last surviving four funnelled ocean liner. Widely considered one of the most attractive ships of her time, Aquitania earned the nickname "Ship Beautiful." This despite criticism of her looks; having too many cowl ventilators and the forward funnel being as close to her bridge as it was is an interesting concept. In her 36 years of service, Aquitania survived military duty in both world wars and was returned to passenger service after each war. Aquitania's record for the longest service career of any 20th century express liner stood until 2004, when the Queen Elizabeth 2 (ultimate career service of 40 years) became the longest-serving liner. The origins of Aquitania lay in the rivalry between the White Star Line and Cunard, Britain's two leading shipping companies. White Star's Olympic and Titanic were larger than the latest Cuna...

RMS Aquitania was in service for decades, and was very much beloved. The third in Cunard Line's "grand trio" of express liners, running mate of the lost Lusitania and the legendary Mauretania (1907), Aquitania was the last surviving four-funnelled ocean liner. Aquitania was pressed into service during both world wars and was one of the longest serving passenger liners of the 20th century. She was also one of the most elegant, nicknamed the "ship beautiful." Maritime authors J. Kent Layton and Tad Fitch have collaborated to put together the most evocative and exciting collection of imagery relating to this historic vessel ever shown.

Murder and Intrigue When High Society Meets the High Seas – A Gripping Historical Mystery The Second Book of the Acclaimed Rowland Sinclair Mysteries, the Historical Crime Series The luxury liner, RMS Aquitania, embodies all that is gracious and refined, in a world gripped crisis and doubt. But elegant atmosphere on board is charged with tension. Civility remains... but how long will the peace hold when people start to die? After months abroad, Rowland Sinclair and his companions begin their journey home on the ship. The heroes dine with a suffragette, a Bishop and a retired World Prophet. The Church encounters less orthodox religion in the Aquitania’s chandeliered ballroom, where men of God rub shoulders with mystics in dinner suits. Gentill’s razor-sharp voice draws these wonderfully diverse characters, and as the pressure rises, so too does a foreboding sense of intrigue. As the bodies pile up, and Rowland unwittingly finds himself at the centre of it all again, can he unravel the mystery and stop these heinous crimes before he and his friends become victims themselves? Gentill captures the readers interest and imagination from the first page in this superbly narrated and observed novel. A highly amusing adventure amidst the horrors of death and the bizarre nature of 1930s society.

The account of a Suffolk family from Woolpit and two of its sons; - one from England and the other from New Zealand. One would experience the plight of those at Gallipoli, Egypt, and in Palestine, while the other would have his destiny played out on the Western Front in France. This is a true story that covers hardship and sacrifice; from prison hulks on the Thames to the vagaries of WW1 at sea, on the ground, and in the air. It takes the reader on the journeys of New Zealand's hospital ships, to air attacks at Gallipoli, and Zeppelins over England; from U boats and disaster at sea, to the horrors of the battle of the Somme. It was a time when love, hardship and duty were forged together with the fighting of a war that was supposedly the War to End all Wars'.

Sitting around a dining-room table in 1907, the owners of the White Star Line discussed their competition to the newly-built Cunard liners, Lusitania and Mauretania. From that smoke-filled room came the first designs of three White Star superliners. Olympic and Titanic were to be built at Harland & Wolff's yard in Belfast, while the third ship was to follow after construction had been completed on the first pair of sisters. The only ship to make a return passenger voyage was Olympic and she was always overshadowed by her younger sisters. This is the definitive story of Titanic's sister RMS Olympic. First published in 2004 to critical acclaim, this new edition presents a revised expanded work from one the most successful maritime authors at work in Britain today.

Although separated from the modern reader by a full century, the First World War continues to generate controversy and interest as the great event upon which modern history pivoted. Not only did the war cull the European peoples of some of their best and brightest, it also led to the destruction of the Austro-Hungarian, German, Ottoman and Russian empires, and paved the way for the Second World War.??This thought-provoking book explores ten alternate scenarios in which the course of the war is changed forever. How would the war have changed had the Germans not attacked France but turned their main thrust against Russia; had the Greeks joined the allies at Gallipoli; or had the British severed the communications of the Ottoman Empire at Alexandretta? What if there was a more decisive outcome at Jutland; if the alternative plans for the Battle of the Somme in 1916 had been put into effect; or if the Americans intervened in 1915, rather 1917???Expertly written by leading military historians, this is a compelling and credible look at what might have been.

D. H. Lawrence: The Life of an Outsider is an illuminating and clear-sighted portrait of one of the twentieth century's most brilliant, radical and misunderstood writers. John Worthen follows Lawrence's from his awkward and intense youth in Nottinghamshire, through his turbulent relationship with Frieda and the years of exile abroad to his premature death at the age of 44. His account is an intimate and absolutely compelling reappraisal of a man who believed himself to be an outsider, in angry revolt against his class, culture and country, and who was engaged in a furious commitment to his writing and a passionate struggle to live according to his beliefs.

In 1948, a small ship carrying Estonian refugees arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax. In this absorbing work, anthropologist Lynda Mannik analyzes the refugee experience through the photographic record of those who made that harrowing voyage. Drawing on a collection of photographs taken during the voyage and at Pier 21, Mannik asks surviving passengers to describe their journey, their reception in Canada, and to what extent the photos reflect their experiences as they remember them. The photographs in the SS Walnut collection, she argues, bear witness to the refugee experience even as the meanings attached to them have changed over time and in shifting contexts.
