Henry E White was born in 1876 in Dunedin NZ, had only primary school education, became a carpenter, then a self-taught engineer, calling himself "architect" in 1912. He designed engineering and architectural works in New Zealand and from 1915, in Australia. He designed the Bunnerong Power Station, a number of high-rise office buildings but was best known for his theatre designs such as the State Theatre, Sydney. His life style was flamboyant with large house at Point Piper (Sydney), large yacht, expensive cars, and a female "companion" who supplanted his wife in 1936. In 1941 he transformed himself into a mining engineer with a loss-making business. He lost his house and his yacht, moving to a small flat at Kings Cross (Sydney) four years before his death in 1952. He died with nothing except an old Rolls. Royce

Self-Styled is about the celebration of freedom of expression, diversity and individualism through personal style. Showcasing photographic diptychs of a select group of fabulous urbanites, each double-page spread illustrates a unique personal choice while implicitly exploring themes such as gender, colour, body shape and taste. The concept behind Self-Styled is simple: each person is asked to choose two outfits - one that represents daywear and a second that represents nightwear. Then, through a dual photographic portrait, author Anthony Lycett encapsulates their distinctive personalities in a stylist-free zone as they are: self-styled. Since embarking on the project in 2008, Anthony has photographed people from all walks of life. His ever-growing body of work provides a fascinating overview of the multifaceted vibrancy of urban cultures and subcultures.

Poetry. "Move over Edward Lear, Lewis Carroll, Dr. Seuss, good old Anon, maybe even William Blake after how many pints of ale. Here's Cody Walker who declaims and bargains an 'icicle for a bicycle,' a 'vale of tears for ten good years.' Political, personal, this book is playful, pithy, outrageously out of style (omg-less rhyme galore!), this gathering a dark, endearing treasure made by accident and pure will. Beware: 'The LORD shall tickle thee with a feather duster, and boot thee with a tire iron, and goose thee with an actual goose.' Are these slippery inventions--'it all unravels'--really poetry? They come out of its ancient middle distance between wake and sleep and what the hell: they mean." --Marianne Boruch "In Cody Walker's THE SELF-STYLED NO-CHILD, the poet-father sings to his new baby (read 'Cradle Song' or 'Small Suite' for perfect little servings of delight), but his childlike playfulness has an internal source, too. The light verses in Walker's new collection often have dark edges to them (see 'The Garden' or 'We Hated Our Lives'), and his social and political satires are unflinching. Still, this word-wizard with a genius for rhyme reminds us of how irrepressibly joy remains." --Mary Jo Salter

Judge Walden Back In Session

If you like Rumpole of the Bailey, you'll love Walden of Bermondsey Judge Walden is back, to preside over five new cases at Bermondsey Crown Court. Retired resident judge Peter Murphy takes us back to the world of criminal trials in South London for another session with Charlie Walden keeping the peace between his fellow judges – Marjorie, ‘Legless’ and Hubert – while fighting off the attacks of the Grey Smoothies, the civil servants who seem intent on reducing the court’s dwindling resources to vanishing point in the name of ‘business cases’ and ‘value for money’. Meet the rum and memorable characters who pop into Charlie’s domain, including Lester Fogle from one of London’s Disorganised Crime Families, Arthur Swivell the one-time Bermondsey singing legend and the very unbardlike Elias Shakespeare. And you will never feel the same about ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’ or the Entente Cordiale again. Fortunately, Charlie has Elsie and Jeanie’s lattes and ham and cheese baps, and newspaper vendor George’s witty banter, to sustain him in the mornings; and in the evenings, the Delights of the Raj, or La Bella Napoli, to enjoy with the Reverend Mrs Walden. Praise for Walden of Bermondsey 'No one writes with more wit, warmth and insight about the law and its practitioners than Peter Murphy. He has no equal since the great John 'Rumpole' Mortimer' - David Ambrose 'Though his exasperation is sometimes palpable, what triumphs over everything is his sense of humour. And it is the humour that makes Walden of Bermondsey such a delightful read. Think of him as what Rumpole would be like if he ever became a judge, and you get some idea of his self-deprecating wit and indomitable stoicism. Add a dash of Henry Cecil for his situation and AP Herbert for the fun he has with the law, and you get a sense of Peter's literary precedents' - Paul Magrath 'The forensic process is examined in a light touch, good-humoured style, which will evoke a constant stream of smiles, and chuckles from nonlawyers and lawyers alike' – Igor Judge, Lord Judge, former Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales
