Years after the Outbreak, the catastrophic event which brought the arrival of the Heralds onto Earth, a man named Zero wakes up from a cryogenically- induced coma. He knows nothing of his past or of himself but just a name: Elizabeth. Embarking on a journey to reveal the truth not just about himself, but about the new, ravaged world around him, he will find out something much more sinister - an uncontrollable force with a unique pair of hands pulling the strings behind the tragedy. The first of a series, Shadows is chilling and gripping, an exceptional read for fans of the horror genre and mystery one alike and it provides a new formula of the post-apocalyptic style as well as a resurrection of the semi- epistolary narrative structure. Since the early 1970s women across South America have been uniting to confont the brutality and repression of military rule. In Out of the Shadows, author Jo Fisher interviews women in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay to show how they have moved into the vacuum left by the military's destruction of the male-dominated left. Chapters describe how women have organised - in communal kitchens in Chile's shantytowns, as trade unionists in Uruguay, peace activists in Paraguay, mothers of the disappeared and self-help groups in Argentina, as grassroots feminists in Chile - ending the isolation of home life. While built around the traditional female concerns such as providing food and care for their families, the new women's movements have developed a grassroots feminism that is strikingly different from the middle class feminism of the city centres and have had a seismic impact on gender consciousness throughout the region.

"Shadows" is a gritty, uncompromising book and also, unusually, a boy's love story. It focuses on Jamie, a fifteen-year-old squash prodigy and his relationship with his overbearing father, who is determined that his son will achieve the success he himself never enjoyed and drives the boy to apoint almost beyond endurance. Then Jamie finds a girl hiding in his shed, and in helping her to escape from the danger that is pursuing her, he is at last able to deal with his own problems. He realises that he can't run away for ever. He has to come out of the shadows and face up to his father, whatever the cost. * Winner of the Angus Book Prize and the Lancashire Children's Book Award. * Major prize-winning author: Tim Bowler won the Carnegie Medal with "River Boy". * Strong themes of overcoming fears, helping others, and standing up for what you believe. * New cover treatment to match Tim Bowler's wonderful new novel, "Storm Catchers". * Author was born and brought up in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, and now lives in Totnes, Devon

For centuries, Mexican-American women have been creative, innovative forces shaping the cultural and economic development of what is now the American Southwest. Whether living in a labor camp, a boxcar settlement, or an urban barrio, Mexican women nurtured families, worked for wages, built extended networks, and participated in community associations--efforts that solidified the community and helped Mexican Americans find their own place in America. Now, in From Out of the Shadows, historian Vicki L. Ruiz provides the first full study of Mexican-American women in the 20th century, in a narrative enhanced by interviews and personal stories that capture a vivid sense of the Mexicana experience in the United States. Beginning with the first wave of women crossing the border early this century, Ruiz reveals the struggles they have faced, the communities they have built, and also highlights the various forms of political protest they have initiated. What emerges from the book is a portrait of a distinctive culture in America that has slowly gathered strength in the last 95 years. From Out of the Shadows is an important addition to the largely undocumented history of Mexican-American women in our century.
