Even as worship wars in the church and music controversies in society at large continue to rage, many people do not realize that conflict over music goes back to the earliest Christians as they sought to live out the "new song" of their faith. In A New Song for an Old World Calvin Stapert challenges contemporary Christians to learn from the wisdom of the early church in the area of music. Stapert draws parallels between the pagan cultures of the early Christian era and our own multicultural realities, enabling readers to comprehend the musical ideas of early Christian thinkers, from Clement and Tertullian to John Chrysostom and Augustine. Stapert's expert treatment of the attitudes of the early church toward psalms and hymns on the one hand, and pagan music on the other, is ideal for scholars of early Christianity, church musicians, and all Christians seeking an ancient yet relevant perspective on music in their worship and lives today.

A Regency Cinderella fights back. Unfairly blamed for her mother’s sins, Lady Deborah Martin can’t seem to please her father. Then, in standing up for herself, she offends another important man in her life, handsome Lord Foxborough. Treated as little more than a servant, this Regency-era Cinderella has her own plans to make a life on the stage, and if the men disapprove, they’d best watch out! And one in particular just might fall in love. This is a lighthearted tale in the traditional Regency style of Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer—no sex, but plenty of romantic complications and a happy ending. “Ms. Diamond is one of the most consistently enjoyable Regency authors around.” —Romantic Times “Clear and crisp … Elevated above the ordinary by the inclusion of some delightful dialogue and some very funny scenes.”--Library Journal “The genre is well served in author Diamond’s second novel, the first being Lady in Disguise.”--Publishers Weekly

This is the story of Ruby Wilson whose beauty was something startling. She was born somewhere and brought up in the back of a hat shop owned by her Aunt Carrie. Men always slipped in and out of Aunt Carrie’s life. Ruby was never shocked. This novel of the Roaring Twenties spares nobody’s feelings as it follows how Ruby took to men, and how men took to Ruby. Ruby of the flaxen hair, pale skin, and long eyes also had a vicious temper, but when men saw her image on a billboard with the legend Wear Ruby Garters they wanted her. Among her suitors were Nicki the Greek, to whom Aunt Carrie clung desperately; Red, the lingerie salesman; Karl, whose parents owned the furniture store where Ruby’s greatest romance found a darkened happiness; and finally Jed, whose squirrel coat Ruby enjoyed so much she wore it in bed. When Ruby was ready to spread her wings and fly beyond the boundaries of her hometown, would she be haunted by her past suitors and coaxed to remain within the confines of what she had always known, or would she find herself free to soar into the larger world, ready to take on new adventures and find someone who could secure her lasting affection?

The Song Of The Dodo

Author: David Quammen

Format: PDF, Mobi

David Quammen's book, The Song of the Dodo, is a brilliant, stirring work, breathtaking in its scope, far-reaching in its message -- a crucial book in precarious times, which radically alters the way in which we understand the natural world and our place in that world. It's also a book full of entertainment and wonders. In The Song of the Dodo, we follow Quammen's keen intellect through the ideas, theories, and experiments of prominent naturalists of the last two centuries. We trail after him as he travels the world, tracking the subject of island biogeography, which encompasses nothing less than the study of the origin and extinction of all species. Why is this island idea so important? Because islands are where species most commonly go extinct -- and because, as Quammen points out, we live in an age when all of Earth's landscapes are being chopped into island-like fragments by human activity. Through his eyes, we glimpse the nature of evolution and extinction, and in so doing come to understand the monumental diversity of our planet, and the importance of preserving its wild landscapes, animals, and plants. We also meet some fascinating human characters. By the book's end we are wiser, and more deeply concerned, but Quammen leaves us with a message of excitement and hope.

Writing has taken over my life.. in a good way. My thoughts continually are geared towards my next song. Sometimes I get a few lines in my head when I am driving and I have to pull over the car and write them down! No matter where I am, I get the urge to write. I could be talking to a neighbor, or be in the middle of mass at church and a word or phrase will pop into my head and whoa! -a new song is born! More than anything I love, love, love, the peace of mind songwriting allows me to have. Most of my lyrics take me 15 to 30 minutes to write. There was a time when I was writing 6-8 lyrics in a day. Sometimes I would sit there and stare at my pencil asking why did you stop? I swear at times the pencil kept moving like I wasnt even thinking of what to write. This is my first edition. I hope to continue with future editions as I am still writing new songs everyday. Someday I hope to put my lyrics to my own music and I recently started taking piano lessons. Hey, we all know life is a learning process; a learning curve, we need to experience the turns with the ride! I wish you all success with this book and look forward to seeing some of you with me when it comes to award times!
