Working with big data can be complex and challenging, in part because of the multiple analysis frameworks and tools required. Apache Spark is a big data processing framework perfect for analyzing near-real-time streams and discovering historical patterns in batched data sets. But Spark goes much further than other frameworks. By including machine learning and graph processing capabilities, it makes many specialized data processing platforms obsolete. Spark's unified framework and programming model significantly lowers the initial infrastructure investment, and Spark's core abstractions are intuitive for most Scala, Java, and Python developers. Spark in Action teaches readers to use Spark for stream and batch data processing. It starts with an introduction to the Spark architecture and ecosystem followed by a taste of Spark's command line interface. Readers then discover the most fundamental concepts and abstractions of Spark, particularly Resilient Distributed Datasets (RDDs) and the basic data transformations that RDDs provide. The first part of the book covers writing Spark applications using the the core APIs. Readers also learn how to work with structured data using Spark SQL, how to process near-real time data with Spark Streaming, how to apply machine learning algorithms with Spark MLlib, how to apply graph algorithms on graph-shaped data using Spark GraphX, and an introduction to Spark clustering. While graphs are often the most natural way to represent the connections among data, the complexity of large graphs makes them conceptually difficult and computationally expensive to explore, query, and analyze. GraphX, a powerful graph processing API for the Apache Spark analytics engine, makes it possible to efficiently explore and interpret large-scale graph data at near-realtime speeds. GraphX works with Spark's in-memory distributed framework to offer unprecedented speed and capacity for analyzing social media data, performing complex textual analysis, handling important machine learning algorithms, and much more. Spark GraphX in Action starts out with an overview of Apache Spark and the GraphX graph processing API. This example-based tutorial explains how to configure GraphX and use GraphX interactively. It offers a crystal-clear introduction to graph elements, which are needed to build big data graphs. Then, it explores the problems and possibilities of graph algorithm implementations. Along the way, it details practical techniques for enhancing applications and applying machine learning algorithms to graph data. Purchase of the print book includes a free eBook in PDF, Kindle, and ePub formats from Manning Publications.

Amanda Howell offers a new perspective on the contemporary pop score as the means by which masculinities not seen—or heard—before become a part of post-World War II American cinema. Popular Film Music and Masculinity in Action addresses itself to an eclectic mix of film, from Elvis and Travolta star vehicles to Bruckheimer-produced blockbuster action, including the work of musically-innovative directors, Melvin Van Peebles, Martin Scorsese, Gregg Araki, and Quentin Tarantino. Of particular interest is the way these films and their representations of masculinity are shaped by generic exchanges among contemporary music, music cultures, and film, combining American cinema's long-standing investment in violence-as-spectacle with similarly body-focused pleasures of contemporary youth music. Drawing on scholarship of popular music and the pop score as well as feminist film and media studies, Howell addresses an often neglected area of gender representation by considering cinematic masculinity as an audio-visual construction. Through her analyses of music’s role in action and other film genres that share its investment in violence, she reveals the mechanisms by which the pop score has helped to reinvent gender—and gendered fictions of male empowerment—in contemporary screen entertainment.

Why can salamanders grow new legs, and young children grow new finger tips, but adult humans can't regenerate? What is the electricity that flows through the human body? Is it the same thing that the Chinese call Qi? If so, what does Chinese medicine know, that western medicine ignores? Dan Keown's highly accessible, witty, and original book shows how western medicine validates the theories of Chinese medicine, and how Chinese medicine explains the mysteries of the body that western medicine largely ignores. He explains the generative force of embryology, how the hearts of two people in love (or in scientific terms `quantum entanglement') truly beat as one, how a cheating heart is also an ill heart (which is why men are twice as likely to die of a sudden heart attack with their mistress than with their wife), how neural crest cells determine our lifespan, and why Proust's madeleines evoked the memories they did. The book shows how the theories of western and Chinese medicine support each other, and how the integrated theory enlarges our understanding of how bodies work on every level. Full of good stories and surprising details, Dan Keown's book is essential reading for anyone who has ever wanted to know how the body really works.

Gabriel Merrick plays with fire. Literally. Sometimes he can even control it. And sometimes he can't. Gabriel has always had his brothers to rely on, especially his twin, Nick. But when an arsonist starts wreaking havoc on their town, all the signs point to Gabriel. Only he's not doing it. And no one seems to believe him. Except a shy sophomore named Layne, a brainiac who dresses in turtlenecks and jeans and keeps him totally off balance. Layne understands family problems, and she understands secrets. She has a few of her own. Gabriel can't let her guess about his brothers, about his abilities, about the danger that's right at his heels. But there are some risks he can't help taking. Three kinds of strategic ideas apply to human achievement: strategic analysis, where you study the situation you face; strategic intuition, where you get a creative idea for what to do; and strategic planning, where you work out the details of how to do it. For more than a decade, William Duggan has conducted pioneering research on strategic intuition. He now gives us this eye-opening book that shows how strategic intuition lies at the heart of great achievements throughout human history: the scientific and computer revolutions, women's suffrage, the civil rights movement, modern art, microfinance in poor countries, and more. Considering the achievements of people and organizations, from Bill Gates to Google, Copernicus to Martin Luther King, Picasso to Patton, you'll never think the same way about strategy again.

The English edition of this book has been prepared from the third Gem1an edition published in December 1974. The first two German editions, published in 1971 and 1972, respectively, were very well received in Germany. We hope that this English version will enjoy a similar popularity by students wishing to understand the essential concepts relevant to the fascinating field of neurophysiology. The evolution of this book has been unique. The first edition was based on a series of lectures presented for many years to first-year physiology students at the Universities of Heidelberg and Mannheim. These lectures were converted into a series of 38 programmed texts, and after extensive testing, published as a programmed textbook of neurophysiology (N europhysiologie programmiert, Springer-Verlag Heidelberg, 1971). Thereafter the present text was written and thoroughly brought up to date. Throughout this period all of the authors were members of the Department of Physiology in Heidel berg allowing for maximum cooperation at all stages of this endeavor. With regard to the English edition, I wish to express my apprecia tion to Mr. Derek Jordan and Mrs. Inge Jordan for translating this book, and to my colleagues Dr. Mark Rowe and Dr. Dean O. Smith for their valuable comments and suggestions on the English manuscript. I express my grateful thanks to the publishers, both in Heidelberg and New York, for their unfailing courtesy and for their extraordinary efficiency.

The first few years of teaching are critical to the professional development of effective English teachers. In these crucial years, new teachers establish their identities, learn the ins and outs of the curriculum, acclimate to unfamiliar communities, and cope with student behaviors that they never expected. All of this can be daunting for novice teachers. This book can help. The stories within are written by English teachers in the early stages of their careers. In their carefully crafted narratives, teachers offer practical strategies, professional insights, and a wealth of tips for surviving the first years in the classroom. The narratives are grouped into thematic chapters with brief introductions of key terms, helpful learning activities, and provocative discussion questions, all intended to foster critical conversation about beginning a career teaching English. In a time when many teachers leave the profession too soon, Early Career English Teachers in Action gives voice to those who have decided to stay. More importantly, this book validates teacher narratives as a powerful way of understanding what happens inside of the classroom—a way that provides more authentic evidence of learning than standardized test scores will ever supply.
