Excerpt from The Bhagavad-Gita, or the Lord's Song: With the Text in Devanagari and an English Translation It is a scripture of Yoga: now Yoga is literally union, and it means harmony with the divine Law, the becoming one with the divine Life, by the subdual of all outward-going energies. To reach this, balance must be gained, equilibrium, so that the self, joined to the Self, shall not be affected by pleasure or pain, desire or aversion, or any of the pairs of opposites between which untrained selves swing. A spiritual treasure house of wisdom, the Bhagavad Gita is said to contain the essence of every Upanishad. Its pages enshrine the sacred lore of ancient India. The teaching opens with Arjuna's indecision on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. He slumps in his chariot, confused over duty, and refuses to fight. The sincere disciple's despair moves the Lord to reveal wisdom that is as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago; like Arjuna, we each face the battlefield of life and mind. Stand up and fight! the Lord tells us. Surrender only to me. In these eighteen chapters from the epic Mahabharata, the Lord reveals the secrets of action, devotion, meditation, and renunciation. Whatever our mental or emotional tendencies may be, we will inevitably awaken. These timeless verses offer mystical wisdom on how to live a virtuous life, as we seek victory. Victory lives within. We need only conquer the worldly confusion of grief, fear, lust, and fury. The Bhagavad Gita offers divine guidance on how to overcome our sorrows of mind and realize the joy of divine bliss. This volume contains an English translation, transliteration, and Devanagari. A comprehensive introduction explores the scripture's cultural, historical, and psychological context. The book is an offering to the Lord who lives in your heart.

The Bhagavad Gita is an ancient Indian text that became an important work of Hindu tradition in terms of both literature and philosophy. The earliest translations of this work from Sanskritinto English were made around 1795 CE by Sir Charles Wilkins. The name Bhagavad Gita means “the song of the Lord”. It is composed as a poem and it contains many key topics related to the Indian intellectual and spiritual tradition. Although it is normally edited as an independent text, the Bhagavad Gita became a section of a massive Indian epic named “The Mahabharata”, the longest Indian epic. There is a part in the middle of this long text, consisting of 18 brief chapters and about 700 verses: this is the section known as the Bhagavad Gita. It is also referred to as the Gita, for short.

The Bhagavad Gita or Our Lords Song is an inspirational 700 verse scripture that forms a part to the beautiful Hindu epic; the Mahabharata. Commonly, the writing is attributed to the Sage Ved Vyasa, but the truth of this has never been fully confirmed. This edition has been exquisitely translated by Annie Besant and is therefore a very readable and enjoyable edition of the book. Reading The Bhagavad Gita is an immensely spiritual experience, it is enlightening and insightful; touching on many deep philosophical questions and ideas. The script follows the conversation of Prince Arjuna and Lord Krishna, as they discuss many philosophical and theological issues, as the story progresses Krishna slowly explains to Arjuna devotion, wisdom and selfless action. A truly great read for anyone looking to get in touch with their inner spirituality and gain a better understanding of Hinduism.
