By the time Alicia Cass is fifteen, she is homeless, a high school dropout, and out of options. Turning to the only family she knows she can trust-after her own family and the foster care system leave her abused and broken-Cass joins a gang on the streets of Los Angeles. It's the 1980s-cocaine and gang violence are at an all-time high, and Cass soon finds herself in the eye of the storm, struggling for survival. Cass's memoir is rooted in courage and determination. It's a story that shows what it's like for one woman grappling with the perilous cycles of abuse. After a childhood buried under the emotional weight of abuse and fear, Cass emerges as a symbol of hope and the power of second chances. You will be inspired by her courage and touched by her eloquent honesty. This riveting memoir delves deep into the gripping account of life in a gang-when you don't know if you can even trust yourself-and the only family you know is the one you have found on the streets.

This booklet has been designed as a counselor-friendly resource tool to assist in companioning others in a loss, grief, or change process. The booklet creates an opportunity for the sharing of what the world was like for a person before the loss or change. (It may have been the death of a family member, a significant role change, or any other type of loss.) It allows for creative and interactive exploration through drawing or journaling thoughts, ideas, feelings, actions, and systems of support. The process allows for exploration and sharing of the “before the loss or change” stage, as well as the “during the event,” and the “after/present” stage or looking into the future. The resource has been designed to be simple to use in a manner that may assist with understanding, sharing, and providing hope.

This book aims to offer an account of conscious experience and of concepts that help us understand empirical reasoning and empirical dialectic. The account offered possesses, it is claimed, two virtues. First, it provides great theoretical freedom. It allows the theoretician freedom to radically reconceive the world. The theoretician may, for example, begin with the conception that colors are genuine qualities of physical bodies and may, in light of empirical findings, shift to the conception that colors are not genuine qualities at all. Second, the account grants empirical reason a great power to constrain: empirical reason can force a particular conception of the self and the world on the rational inquirer. These seemingly contrary virtues are reconciled through a novel treatment of presentation and appearances in the account offered of conscious experience and a novel treatment of ostensive definitions in the account offered of concepts. The argument of the book is buttressed by a critical study of the principal approaches to experience and reason found in the philosophical literature.--

Some of H.D.'s most oft-quoted lines have to do with the meaning and value of words; they are conditioned to hatch butterflies. Yet rather than seeking merely to understand how H.D. represented the meaning and value of words, this volume uses 'the butterfly hatch' as a metaphor for thinking more broadly about the capacity of literary experience to hatch transformed persons--'butterflies' in quest of wisdom. This book reads H.D.'s autobiographical prose and recently published work of the 1940s for its ability to offer new insights into such pertinent and interconnected areas as literary contexts, imagination, and personal and social transformation. The author uncanonically seats her in conversation with the neglected literary theorist, Louise Rosenblatt. This book synthesizes the work of H.D. and Rosenblatt to create an emergent personalist theory of literary experience in the quest for wisdom.

Near an isolated mansion lies a beautiful garden. In this garden grow luscious flowers, shady trees...and a collection of precious "butterflies"--young women who have been kidnapped and intricately tattooed to resemble their namesakes. Overseeing it all is the Gardener, a brutal, twisted man obsessed with capturing and preserving his lovely specimens. When the garden is discovered, a survivor is brought in for questioning. FBI agents Victor Hanoverian and Brandon Eddison are tasked with piecing together one of the most stomach-churning cases of their careers. But the girl, known only as Maya, proves to be a puzzle herself. As her story twists and turns, slowly shedding light on life in the Butterfly Garden, Maya reveals old grudges, new saviors, and horrific tales of a man who'd go to any length to hold beauty captive. But the more she shares, the more the agents have to wonder what she's still hiding....

In an age when much of the Earth's surface has already been explored, mankind's search has extended both outwards, beyond earth into outer space, and inwards to the non-physical realms that lie within ourselves. This inner space is the domain of the Shaman who knows that everything has life and that there is an invisible essence which links all that exists. Thus, through deep connection with nature and the more subtle levels of existence generally, the Shaman understands the correct place of all things - including himself. The shaman knows this information because he has experienced it for himself. We all have the potential to know and experience the inner realms. In this way we can discover our true purpose and find real happiness and fulfilment generally. This text explains practical contemporary shamanism and shows how to apply its principles and techniques to everyday life.
