This highly useful bilingual thesaurus is aimed at all English-speaking learners and users of French at intermediate and more advanced levels. Structured in a uniquely helpful way, it is arranged thematically, with extensive subdivisions into topic categories. Two alphabetical indexes of more than 8,000 words each, one listing English vocabulary and the other French, help readers find what they're looking for easily. This is the best bilingual thesaurus available Like the best thesauri, it gives not only analogous words but analogous phrases and expressions as well; moreover it explains in what contexts the different synonyms should be used. Contains a wealth of information Let's say you want to look up the French for the word "difficult." You may know that this translates into French as "difficile" but may be curious about other, synonymous words that could be used to mean "difficult" in slightly different contexts. Look up "difficult" in the English-French index at the back of the book, and you're directed to a section that gives you a range of synonymous words and tells you when to use them. Explains nuances and contexts In this way it's like a very elaborate dictionary, with phrases as well as words. Easy to use in French and English There's not only a long English-French index, but a long French-English one as well, so you can come at it from either language, to find your lists of synonyms in either English or French. Moreover, it gives American English expressions as well as British English ones, wherever they differ.

Websters paperbacks take advantage of the fact that classics are frequently assigned readings in English courses. By using a running English-to-French thesaurus at the bottom of each page, this edition of Cambridge Sketches by Frank Preston Stearns was edited for three audiences. The first includes French-speaking students enrolled in an English Language Program (ELP), an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) program, an English as a Second Language Program (ESL), or in a TOEFL or TOEIC preparation program. The second audience includes English-speaking students enrolled in bilingual education programs or French speakers enrolled in English-speaking schools. The third audience consists of students who are actively building their vocabularies in French in order to take foreign service, translation certification, Advanced Placement (AP) or similar examinations. By using the Webster's French Thesaurus Edition when assigned for an English course, the reader can enrich their vocabulary in anticipation of an examination in French or English. TOEFL, TOEIC, AP and Advanced Placement are trademarks of the Educational Testing Service which has neither reviewed nor endorsed this book. All rights reserved. Websters edition of this classic is organized to expose the reader to a maximum number of difficult and potentially ambiguous English words. Rare or idiosyncratic words and expressions are given lower priority compared to difficult, yet commonly used words. Rather than supply a single translation, many words are translated for a variety of meanings in French, allowing readers to better grasp the ambiguity of English, and avoid them using the notes as a pure translation crutch. Having the readerdecipher a words meaning within context serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. Each page covers words not already highlighted on previous pages. If a difficu

This book is concerned with bilingual thematic dictionaries (BTDs). The three chief aims of the research project are: 1) to identify the characteristic features of the bilingual thematic dictionary, 2) to gauge its usefulness, and 3) to make suggestions as to how it could be improved. Various approaches are adopted in order to reveal the nature of the BTD. The typological approach considers the lexicographic genres (bilingual, thematic, and pedagogical) which have been combined to create this hybrid reference work. Particular attention is paid to the BTD's immediate forerunner and closest lexicographic relative: the monolingual thematic learner's dictionary. Detailed textual analyses of contemporary thematic dictionaries identify the characteristic features of the macrostructure, microstructure, and other components from a structural perspective. In order to evaluate the usefulness of the BTD features identified, the textual analyses are supplemented by three pieces of user research involving a questionnaire (to elicit learners' opinions), a test (on the effectiveness of the access structure), and an experiment (to discover how a learner uses a BTD).

Reviews are selected from American Reference Books Annual 1999, covering reference titles published in 1998, with a few from 1997. Detailed and often evaluative annotations written by practicing librarians and subject specialists examine the nature, scope, and usability of each work. In many cases reviews from professional journals are cited and materials are compared to similar works. Each entry includes complete bibliographic and ordering information.
