The Merger: M.D.s and D.O.s in California If you are interested in the recent history of the medical professions, this book is for you. If personal narratives of historical events speak to you as a second layer of documentation, this book is for you. If you are aware that in America there exist two separate yet equal, fully licensed physicians, M.D.s and D.O.s, you might be interested in learning about their unique relationship in California. If you know little about D.O.s, this book will give you a picture of their approach to patient care and to their M.D. colleagues. The osteopathic profession in California has a unique history, as it differs dramatically from the professions history in the rest of the nation. More than 100 years ago, a small pioneering group of osteopathic physicians established in Southern California the Pacific School of Osteopathy to graduate physicians and surgeons with the ability to acquire an unlimited license. Since then, the educational, research, and regulatory arenas of osteopathy have seen in California low points of near elimination and high points of recognition. Cultures are based on firm beliefs in the truth of their understanding of the world. Often they collide with those who respect different truths. Similarly, the medical culture in California went through collisions between osteopathic and allopathic medicine, often in response to competition and antagonism. Which values and beliefs about each others profession were held so fervently in California that prompted the unique event of absorbing the osteopathic profession into allopathic mainstream medicine? This project explores the events, unique to California but with repercussions nation-wide, of a merger between osteopathic and allopathic medicine. In 1962, the relatively small medical organization of fully licensed osteopathic physicians (the California Osteopathic Organization) merged with the much larger mainstream medical profession (the California Medical Association). What were the incentives for a fully licensed parallel healthcare profession to forfeit its identity and philosophy? What key players and leaders emerged? How did the individual practicing physician think and feel about the merger? While about two thousand osteopathic physicians changed to the M.D. degree, about two hundred California D.O.s did not merge but persevered in their battle to restore the licensing power of their profession in California. What social and personal motivational sources sustained this group for over a decade? How has osteopathys unique history affected medical education and professional relations, nation-wide and internationally? Answers to these questions have emerged in historical narratives by key persons figuring in the events. Most of them have not written about their lives and their social and political surroundings at the time of the merger and its repercussions. Many never learned the long-term outcomes of their endeavors. Our multidisciplinary research team transcribed in-depth interviews to capture the thoughts and feelings among individuals who played significant roles from the 1940s to the 70s. With the approval of the Institutional Review Board of the University of California, Irvine for the protection of the participants rights, we asked a diverse group, 35 in all, of physicians, administrators, lawyers and lobbyists, to provide their historical narratives and their suggestions for future directions. Our objective has been to give an unbiased account, listening equally to representatives of allopathy, osteopathy, and politics. Inspired by Dr. Gevitz cogent academic analysis of osteopathic medicine in America, this book presents personal perceptions of events, integrated with documented descriptions, stored in archives, to facilitate the readers understanding and analysis. The work has been based on the assumption

A synopsis of David Johns’ MERGER'. When Thomas Cork a devout Catholic dies, his advertising agency is inherited by his grandson Sean a 28 year old graduate from University who puts sport and business before girls. Following the demise of his grandfather Sean enters into a merger with Jewish entrepreneur George Wilcox the father of his platonic girlfriend Sadie who he has been in a friendship with him for three years. Despite trying not to be involved with females he finds himself propositioned by three girls in the space of a few days. First it is by the long legged black beauty Mandy Price, an artist. The following day it is by physiotherapist Terri Mason. Two days later he is caught in the web of his best pal's girlfriend, Debbie Greenwood. Whilst playing in a cup Final Sean is knocked out, but later recovers. In the bar, his drink of orange squash is doctored and he loses consciousness. Sadie drives him home and removes his clothes before putting him to bed. Not realizing he is in the bathroom she walks in and sees him naked for the first time. Stephen Talbot ends his relationship with Debbie Greenwood when he meets stunning hitchhiker Karen Steele. He persuades his father to employ her. Kevin, Stephen's younger brother starts a relationship with Sean's sister Iris. Early in their relationship she goes with him on a business assignment to a country club. Neither of them are aware, it is a nudist retreat. Sean introduces Debbie to his older brother Neil, a family doctor. She asks him to take her to a Charity fashion show where she is a model. The vicar has a nasty accident. A man in the audience offers a £1,000 to any model who would take off their bikini on stage. The following day Neil drives Debbie over to her parents house on Sunday after spending most of the night talking. Within a week Sean and Debbie have indicated their feelings for each other and share another night of passion. Neil is under the impression he is still going out with Debbie. Sean is a member of the Edgewarebury joggers club and helps to organise a camping trip. Neil is called out to an emergency when a young couple get stuck together whilst making love. Sean's and Stephen give chase when a car is stolen. They catch the thief who turns out to be a schoolboy and his young girlfriend. Sadie hopes that the forthcoming assignment overseas with Sean will take their relationship beyond the platonic stage. Zelda Whitways, is accused of murdering her former boyfriend solicitor Aubrey Cruxton. She is subjected to a harrowing experience at the police station. The charges are eventually dropped partly due to the intervention of her new boyfriend, Mark Morton. Sean's mother invites Iris, Kevin, Sean, Sadie, Neil and Debbie to come to Bournemouth to meet her new boyfriend, Rupert, an American author. Illness prevents Sadie from going, and a medical emergency delays Neil. Sadie's brother, Andrew a journalist returns from Israel and moves into a flat owned by Mandy. She ends her relationship with her boyfriend when she finds out he is gay, and moves back to her flat. Sadie is almost raped by a friend of her cousin. Her brother and Sean take this rapist out to a nearby country park and give him a good hiding. Later he is struck by a car and killed. His body is thrown into the lake. Suspicion falls on Sean and Andrew. However a cheating wife and her lover are charged with the offence. A bomb is planted on Mark's yacht. Fortunately Zelda and himself have just left the yacht in a dingy heading for a small deserted island, when the explosive device goes off and wrecks the yacht. They are reported missing, believed dead. The day after the explosion, a married couple in a small boat see their smoke signal coming from the island, and rescue them. An American couple who were filming in the yacht marina, obtained a video of the terrorists who planted the bomb. Karen Steele goes to see her friend in a house where she used to liv
