Excerpt from The Book of Psalms: And the Free Church Hymn Book At the head of each tune a passage from a Psalm or Paraphrase is indicated as suitable to be sung to it. It is hoped that, as a rule, the tunes will be sung to the passages to which they are set. But to guide in the use of the freedom of choice possible in a cut-leaved book each Psalm has prefixed to it names of tunes suitable to the whole or to portions indicated. It is much to be desired that respect should be paid by ministers in the use of the Psalms to the divisions thus indicated, and that the too frequent practice of giving out always the same number of verses, without regard to the connection of thought, should be discontinued. In certain Psalms, of which only some versos are usually sung-such as the 73rd, the use of which is very much restricted to verses 23-26-in addition to tunes for the particular part, chants have been suggested to which the whole Psalm may be sung. This has been done with the view of promoting a wider and more varied use of the Psalms in praise than heretofore. It is felt that every means should be used to secure for the Psalms a prominent place in worship, and to'prevent them from being pushed aside by the Hymns. A selection of prose Psalms, pointed for chanting, has been added at the end of the metrical version, which it is hoped will increase the acceptableness and utility of the work. This selection contains a considerable number of copyright tunes, which are printed by permission of composers and proprietors, in meet cases generously granted without charge. The necessary acknowledgments are made in connection with each tune. If in any case copyright has been unintentionally infringed, the compilers trust the error will be excused. May this " Psalter" promote the glory of God in the praise of the sanctuary! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The New Psalms and Hymns: Published by Authority of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States, A. D. 1901 The Committee was exceedingly fortunate in securing the services of Prof. Joseph Maclean and Prof. John P. Campbell, ph.d., as Musical Editors. Sincere thanks are expressed, in this public way, for the invaluable and self-denying labor of these gentlemen, wrought in love for the Church and the praise of God. In the whole work of selecting hymns and tunes, and in their adaptation to each other, the Church was largely consulted, both in the original compilation as reported to the Assembly, and in the subsequent changes made in deference to criticisms and suggestions. As to the hymns, a sincere effort was made to retain all those belonging to the older body of hymnology, that seemed to be endeared by use to the Church at large, and to select the very best of those that may be classed as new. Under the limitation not to make too large a book, it is apparent that, in both classes of hymns, some had to be omitted which many persons might have selected. A large number of the versions of Psalms has been distributed through the book, under appropriate classification. An index of these, at the beginning of the book, puts them within as easy reach as if arranged separately, after the old way. In editing the text of the hymns, the Committee endeavored, as far as pos sible, to present them as originally written, unless there was good reason for the contrary. In the case of some very familiar hymns it seemed better to retain an altered text, which had endeared itself to the Church by use. In this work, last ing thanks are due to Rev. Louis E. Benson, D.D., Editor of the hymnal, for the free use that has been allowed of that excellent book of praise, as also for his personal assistance in verifying the texts of hymns not found in that collection, and in settling many points of authorship and date.
