Why is it so difficult to change our beliefs and behaviors even when we know they no longer serve us? How can certain individuals reverse "incurable" disease while others suffer the effects of childhood wounds despite years of therapy? How is it that the centenarians make up the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population—even though the majority of people over the age of 100 rarely visit their doctors? When Dr. Mario Martinez began his career in clinical neuropsychology, he was determined to find the answers to baffling questions like these. With The MindBody Code, he shares the rewards of an investigation that has spanned generations and cultures to reveal the most effective methods for initiating deep and lasting change—and the empowering new science of biocognition that substantiates their results. Far from a quick-fix approach, The MindBody Code will challenge you to embrace a bold paradigm for health and wellbeing that requires your courage, patience, and commitment. You will not only learn the basics of this cutting-edge science, you will learn to communicate with your body in its own "biosymbolic" language to begin making changes that till this point may have been elusive at best. Through fascinating case studies and practical training in embodying the methodology, Dr. Martinez illuminates: The overt and subtle ways our cultural beliefs impact our immune system—and the pathways to healing the archetypal wounds of shame, abandonment, and betrayal How to break through the ceilings of abundance that limit prosperity and create the "subcultures of wellness" that will help you reach your full potential Lessons from the centenarians—how to transform "aging consciousness" to continually increase your value and competence as you grow older Psychospiritual conflicts—getting to the root of challenges often mistaken as psychiatric disorders Why do so many popular methods of personal transformation fail despite our efforts and intentions? Because they don't address the mindbody code—your body's "operating instructions" for interpreting your world, creating your sense of self, and defining what's really possible for you. The MindBody Code is your key to safely and successfully confront your fears, disillusionment, and learned helplessness with tools that harness the hope, joy, and unconditional love you hold within. Course objectives: Explain the overt and subtle ways our cultural beliefs impact our immune system—and the pathways to healing the archetypal wounds of shame, abandonment, and betrayal Discuss how to break through the ceilings of abundance that limit prosperity and create the "subcultures of wellness" that will help you reach your full potential Utilize lessons from the centenarians—how to transform "aging consciousness" to continually increase your value and competence as you grow older Define psychospiritual conflicts—how to get to the root of challenges often mistaken as psychiatric disorders

The Mind–Body Problem: A Psychobiological Approach examines the mind-body problem from a psychobiological perspective. It intends to show that the idea of a separate mental entity is not only unwarranted by the available data and the existing psychological models, but collides head-on with the most fundamental ideas of all modern science and is thus a stumbling block to progress. The book abandons ordinary language in favor of the state space language, which is mathematically precise and is shared by science and scientific philosophy. Comprised of 10 chapters, this monograph begins with an overview of the mind-body problem and its main proposed solutions, classified into main genera: psychophysical monism and psychophysical dualism. In particular, ten views on the mind-body problem are analyzed, along with three main varieties of materialism with regards to the problem: eliminative, reductive (or leveling), and emergentist. The discussion then turns to the notion of a concrete or material system, based on the assumption that behavior is an external manifestation of neural processes. Subsequent chapters explore the specific functions of the central nervous system; sensation and perception; behavior and motivation; memory and learning; thinking and knowing; and consciousness and personality. The book also considers sociality and social behavior in animals before concluding with an assessment of a psychological explanation of the mind, with emphasis on dualism and monism. This work will be of interest to students, academicians, practitioners, and investigators in the fields of psychobiology, psychology, neurophysiology, and philosophy.

Got Chronic Health Issues? Do you feel bogged down by negativity in your life? Are you suffering from disease or illness without a known cause? Have you ever had the suspicion that your physical challenges are trying to teach you something, but you just couldn't figure out what it was? What if chronic or recurring conditions are actually a higher power's way of communicating with us, but we just don't know how to decipher the messages? Though often ignored by Western medicine, the connection between mind, body, and spirit is a strong one. Looking for a Magic Bullet Solution? Have you ever suspected that you could make yourself sick or well based on the power of your thoughts? This is the mind-body-spirit connection in action. You can think of these three aspects like the legs of a table-if any one of the legs is weak, you're apt to experience poor health. But how do you bring the table back in balance if one of the legs is wobbly? Is it all about nutrition or exercise? Will meditation or yoga act as a cure-all? It's easy to wish for a magic bullet approach-one thing that will solve all your health problems-but the truth is more complex than that. Achieve Vibrant Health on Every Level Cassie Sobelton presents a comprehensive health solution in her debut book, "Back to Balance: Crack Your Mind, Body, Spirit Code to Transform Your Health." Whereas other approaches tend to focus on one of the three areas, Sobelton advises that all require our attention. Learn how to trust your intuition and recognize signs that you're on the right (or wrong ) path. Get practical advice for what to eat and how to move your body. If you're frustrated by a Western approach to health and disease, Back to Balance offers the holistic solution you've been searching for.

The relation of mind to body has been argued about by philosophers for centuries. The Mind-Body Problem: An Opinionated Introduction presents the problem as a debate between materialists about the mind and their opponents. After examining the views of Descartes, Hume and Thomas Huxley the debate is traced through the twentieth century to the present day. The emphasis is always on the arguments used, and the way one position develops from another. By the end of the book the reader is afforded both a grasp of the state of the controversy, and how we got there.

Mind Body Unity

Over the past twenty years, an explosion of scientific studies have helped to explain why our state of mind may exert such a strong influence on the state of our health. In Mind-Body Unity science writer Henry Dreher weighs the results of leading-edge mind-body research, and he concludes that mind and body are not merely connected, they are unified. Our minds play a role in health, Dreher argues, the way our eyes play a role in sight. Integrating biological research on mind-body unity with psychosocial research on emotions in human health, Dreher surveys remarkable findings on the role of emotions, coping, and personality in coronary heart disease; on psychosocial factors in cancer progression and survival; and on the social dimensions of human health. He also describes mind-body approaches to the treatment of cancer, women's health conditions, somatization disorder, and in surgery. Finally, Dreher provides a critical overview of the social and political context of this research, from the presentations of leading popularizers such as Bernie Siegel and Deepak Chopra, to the experiences of practitioners and patients, to the resistance of mainstream medicine, to the many exciting possibilities suggested by a deeper understanding of how mind and body are inextricably bound. -- James S. Gordon, M.D., Director, Center for Mind-Body Medicine and Former Chairman, White House Commission on Complimentary and Alternative Medicine Policy

Now there is a hopeful, painless, and low-cost approach to infertility written by a hypnotherapist who has successfully helped women achieve pregnancy by removing blocks in their subconscious mind. There are many infertility-specific issues blocking the mind's subconscious that affect body functions and health. Women with a vague diagnosis of "unexplained infertility," and even those who have been diagnosed infertile due to minor physical issues, find that the mind can remove many physical and emotional barriers that aren't significant enough to cause permanent infertility. Hypnosis is simply gaining access to the subconscious mind—the place that holds all our psychological "blockages." Reprogramming the information going to our body's cells can be a complementary process to any fertility path a woman has chosen. This heartening guide can also benefit any woman undergoing assisted reproductive technologies, those looking for alternatives to these procedures, or for women who are just beginning to think about planning a family and want to prepare themselves for pregnancy.

In The Mind-Body Problem, Katha Pollitt takes the ordinary events of life–her own and others’–and turns them into brilliant, poignant, and often funny poems that are full of surprises and originality. Pollitt’s imagination is stirred by conflict and juxtaposition, by the contrast (but also the connection) between logic and feeling, between the real and the transcendent, between our outer and inner selves: Jane Austen slides her manuscript under her blotter, bewildered young mothers chat politely on the playground, the simple lines of a Chinese bowl in a thrift store remind the poet of the only apparent simplicities of her childhood. The title poem hilariously and ruefully depicts the friction between passion and repression (“Perhaps / my body would have liked to make some of our dates, / to come home at four in the morning and answer my scowl / with ‘None of your business!’ ”). In a sequence of nine poems, Pollitt turns to the Bible for inspiration, transforming some of the oldest tales of Western civilization into subversive modern parables: What if Adam and Eve couldn’t wait to leave Eden? What if God needs us more than we need him? With these moving, vivid, and utterly distinctive poems, Katha Pollitt reminds us that poetry can be both profound and accessible, and reconfirms her standing in the first rank of modern American poets.
