Children will be enchanted by the quaint humor and timeless wisdom of these age-old fables drawn from Buddhist texts. Timid rabbits, noble deer, quarrelsome quails, greedy merchants, and other memorable animal and human characters populate the tales, all of which offer thought-provoking morals. "The Turtle Who Couldn't Stop Talking" illustrates the folly of offering a reply when silence is the best answer; "The Ox Who Won the Forfeit" testifies to the effectiveness of kindness rather than brute force; and "The Golden Goose" and "The Penny-Wise Monkey" demonstrate how greed can ruin good fortune. These and dozens of other captivating stories are further enhanced by charming silhouette images.

This charming story is a children's folktale that I have recreated for Western readers, specifically for children between the ages of five and eleven. There are many versions of this story told all over the world. In this rendition the setting is the jungle of Southern Africa. Young readers will find the little monkey fascinating. He is the innocent hero, sweet and trusting. The crocodile is a master of trickery who entices the little monkey by making up stories about the happenings on the other side of the river. In the end, the little monkey prevails over the treacherous advances of the crocodile My wish is that this tale will entertain the children and convey a positive message that enriches their lives. Thelma Grace Sithole was born in the township of Rimbi in the Chipinge District of Zimbabwe, Africa. She moved to the United States to attend Lake Erie College in Ohio where she majored in Mathematics and minored in English. After receiving her bachelor's degree, she earned a Master's Degree in computer science from the University of Massachusetts in Lowell. She currently is working as a software engineer in the banking industry. The idea of writing this book was born out of the need to finance the Tekeshe Foundation (www.tekeshe.org) which she formed to continue her parents' vision of empowering the young people in the rural areas of Chipinge to grow up to be successful, self-reliant citizens. Please refer to the section entitled "The Tekeshe Foundation" in the back of this book for more information about its goals and the desperate situation faced by the people for whom it was established.

The series TALL TALES OF OLD INDIA is a modern English retelling of The Panchatantra (literally five books), a collection of millennia old Indian morality tales. Eighty five stories depict animals and humans struggling with thorny issues of friendship, collaboration, conflict and ambition. Relentless in their unwillingness to whitewash or romanticize adult life, they describe the ignoble as well as the noble, cruelty and deceit as well as honor, foolishness as much as cunning, deception as rampant as honesty. Monkey and Crocodile the fourth set of twelve stories, deals with how to protect and preserve any gains you have made in life, no matter in what sphere. Most of the loss-of-gain stories are told by the Monkey who fooled the Crocodile into freeing him from sure death by telling a clever story. Many are about the use of deceit to improve one’s position, or to protect oneself. And the losers are foolish enough to be tricked out of their gains by a sweet-talking adversary. They are gullible and deserve what they get. Deceit, when exposed, can lead to the deceiver’s undoing. One should be humble before the noble, use intrigue when one cannot win advantage by strength, pay bribes when necessary, pick a fight only with equals, and give good advice only to those best able to use it.
