Poetry became my passion as a child growing up on farms in Kansas and Missouri. Being one of nine siblings helped create many characters and settings for my poetry. Thus, most of these selections are from personal experiences and meaningful friendships. As you leaf through the pages of this book, you will find whimsical, nostalgic, mysterious and sentimental poems. In particular, poems referencing World War ll brought many memories and emotions to mind as I wrote the words. My hope is you will find enjoyment and a sense of awareness and gratitude in the joys and lessons that life can teach us.

This sentimental yet scholarly look at an American institution preserves the one room school story before it vanishes forever. Once there were over 100 one room schools scattered throughout Morgan County, Colorado. Of the few that remain, most are in advanced stages of disrepair. These schoolhouses were often products of the Homesteading Act, when federal lands were opened for settlement. The farmers and ranchers who came to stake their claim all wanted their children to be educated. Morgan County was a region abundant in Homesteads. One-room schools, usually built by the community, were constructed every two to four miles. Generally, one teacher was hired to instruct grades one through eight. For over 75 years (from 1889-1965), these lonely sentinels of Morgan County provided education to that era's youth. Using a mixture of past and present photographs, this book is the ultimate resource for a comprehensive study of the one room schoolhouse through the microcosm of Morgan County.

Offering a glimpse at the values that built this country, The One-Room Schoolhouse is a poignant, engaging, beautiful and heart-warming tribute to an enduring slice of Americana. From 1750 through about 1950, the one-room schoolhouse was a common fixture on the American landscape, with as many as 200,000 in total across the land. Today, approximately 450 one-room schoolhouses are still in use. Despite the decline in numbers, it remains a powerful presence, and its mere mention conjures up feelings of warmth and nostalgia for a long ago time. The One-Room Schoolhouse pays homage to this American icon and is a tour of these structures still standing, detailing the best examples from the forty-eight contiguous states. Exploring working schools, some in existence for more than 100 years, schools restored as historic museums, and schools converted into private residences, The One-Room Schoolhouse touches and inspires us by sharing "conversations" with past and present one-room schoolhouse teachers.

Nostalgic reminders of a time now past, one-room schoolhouses are deeply embedded in our heritage. Decades after their original purpose and inhabitants have vanished, they dot the rural landscape in all conditions, from neglected and near collapse to handsomely renovated places repurposed into a new existence as living quarters. Today no matter their state they stand as miniature gems of nineteenth-century American history as well as charming examples of rural architecture---above all, things to be treasured and preserved. Mary Keithan's Michigan One-Room Schoolhouses is a beautifully illustrated chronicle that details nearly a hundred of the state's early schoolhouses. Together with information about each schoolhouse's architecture and history, including interviews with former students and teachers, Keithan's photographs bring these structures back to life and assure their place in history. Mary Keithan is a professional photographer living in Ray, Michigan. Her previous books include Michigan's Heritage Barns and A Time in Michigan: A Photographic Series. New York Times critic Vicki Goldberg selected Keithan's 1995 image "Desert Storm Barn" for the Light Impression Biennial.

The one-room schoolhouse has been infused into the collective American nostalgia. This project involved an in-depth look at these buildings as a unique aspect of rural vernacular culture, history, and architecture. The main focus of this thesis was put on a prime example of these buildings: Pringle School in Marengo, Illinois. Built in 1867 and consolidated in 1947, Pringle fulfilled a need for public education in its area. The information covered is given in five distinct sections: a brief history of one room schoolhouses, history of Marengo, a building diagnostics report conducted on Pringle School, the history of Pringle School, and a look at the potential for Pringle's future use. The first section looks specifically at how and why the one room schoolhouse came about as well as why it declined in popularity. The second section goes over the history of Marengo, Illinois to establish the setting in which Pringle School was built. The building diagnostics report looks at the overall structure of Pringle School, while also doing an in-depth look at the layout of the building's foyer and front closet areas to better understand changes that have occurred there over the years. The last two sections detail Pringle School's history, looking at various points in time and considering potential paths for the building's future. Upon examination of these areas, it was found that Pringle School is reflective of other one room schoolhouses yet unique onto itself. Some distinctive aspects include the use of limestone as the exterior building material and shifting of the storage/closet spaces into chemical toilet rooms. At the same time, the building fulfilled the same need for education in its community that many other rural schools served; ultimately facing the same challenges that brought about its official closure. Through looking at all that Pringle School has to offer, it is possible to understand a part of American history that is slowly being lost to time.

This book compiles black and white photographs of 49 one-room (and occasionally two-room) schoolhouses in Arkansas. The book aims to share the vision of these special buildings that were so important in shaping the educational system, communities, and lives. An introduction describes the pinhole cameras that were used and how the different effects achieved in the photographs were a direct result of the the design and characteristics of the pinhole camera. There is one photograph of each school, with its name and a short description on the facing page. Descriptions include architectural features, present condition and use, and available history. The afterword comments on the special characteristics of one-room schools and their unique place in American history, and includes testimony from a former student of a one-room school and from a teacher who started her teaching career of over 30 years in a one-room school. Appendix lists the schools; their approximate locations; the type of camera, film, and filter used; and exposure times. (Td).

This is a book about a simple everyday business test - a Disaster Recovery (DR) Drill or at least it was supposed to be simple. Instead, it became a multi-day, chilling voyage through unexpected twists, horror filled events and bizarre adventures for a woman that is somehow strangely connected to the past of a building and a town she has never seen or heard of in her life. Sandy Williams is just an ordinary woman on an ordinary business trip. From the moment she enters the building where she is to spend the next few days, it calls to her, it haunts her and it spreads fear into every corner of her body. She begins to question what's real and what's not and finally has to question her own history, sanity and destiny. Sandy ultimately realizes she has been sent to this place at this time by some unknown force and for some unknown reason. Whatever it is, she must discover it before something happens that pulls her into a world where she can never return.
